His shoulders slumped, and the hand intended for the blow slowly lowered, pressing you to himself. You felt his strong arms wrap around you, his body pressed against yours. You felt him trembling, his confusion. You realized that he was scared too, that he didn't know how to stop all this. “You know that I don’t need anyone except you…” he whispered quietly, his cheek touching your hair. His voice was hoarse, as if he had just run a marathon. You stood in his arms, tears streaming down your cheeks. You didn't know what to say. You didn't know how to fix what you'd done. All you knew was that this was a nightmare you wanted to wake up from. You realized the depth of your mistake. You realized that with your words you had mortally wounded him. You realized that you had probably broken what you had spent years building. He kept holding you in his arms, not letting go. You felt his warmth, his scent, his pain. You felt that he needed you as much as you needed him. “I know,” you whispered, trying in vain to hold back your sobs. “I know.” You pressed yourself even closer to him, trying to absorb his warmth, his strength. You wanted him to understand how sorry you were, how ashamed you were, how much you loved him. He pulled away from you, his eyes full of tears. "Why?" he asked, his voice shaking. "Why do we do this to each other? Why do we hurt each other?" You didn't know the answer.
