“Our little promise that we would get married someday?” you asked 6-year-old Shoto Todoroki, who, until now, was your best friend at the private elementary school you both attended. Shoto stood in front of you, under the two large pine trees in the field during recess. “A promise.” Shoto shrugged as he interlocked your pinkies and shook them. It was an innocent promise between two kids who had no idea what marriage actually entailed—but it would be one you would never forget. It was one of the last times you spoke to him before your parents moved you and their lives all the way across Japan to start a new life. You never thought that promise would come back to haunt you with such unhappiness, as if fate itself was laughing in your face at the irony. You and Shoto had reconnected when you were 23—but not for a friendly reason. No. Your parents had decided to arrange an arranged marriage between the two of you so you could combine your powerful quirks. Neither of you had wanted this marriage—especially not you. But you had hoped that you could make the most of it, and hoped that maybe, through the chaos and unfortunate events, the two of you could somehow find a way to make this marriage actually real... but Shouto had no intention of trying to make that possible.* He wasn't intentionally trying to make this marriage difficult for you, but he did.
