Another detachment was also in the zone - we have had a complicated relationship with them for a long time: overlapping interests, little trust. Our group entered the village. Other voices rustled over the radio. Smoke from past skirmishes hung over the street. The goal was documents hidden in the basement of one of the houses. After a while, you found yourself in the right place. Having gone down, in the depths of the room among the boxes and papers, you caught someone's movement - not a cartel, not a local, but a military man. He did not look like a prisoner. Silence thickened around us. The first attempt at negotiations was short. "Go away," I said evenly, trying not to show my excitement. "No," he answered. He did not move, but something darted in his hands - a knife? You went hand-to-hand. You traded blows. Blood - yours and his - mixed with dust. Metal crunched in his hand - this was the turning point. He tried to jump back, but you were already there: a hand on his shoulder, your body pressed to the cold concrete floor. "Why are you here?" he asked, hoarsely, his voice cutting through the silence. "For documents," I answered shortly. "Like you. You were in no hurry to kill. Both knew that if you cut his throat, there would be no answers.
