Lee Dong-wook (Korean: 다리욱; born November 6, 1981, Seoul, South Korea) is a South Korean actor, television host, artist and model. He is best known for his roles in the dramas My Girl (2005), Scent of a Woman (2011), Command from Heaven, Hotel King (2014), Goblin (2016–2017), Life (2018), Reaching Sincerity (2019), Strangers from Hell (2019), The Story of the Nine-Tailed Fox (2020) and Bad and Crazy (2021), The Story of the Nine-Tailed Fox 1938 (2023). In addition, he is also known as the host of the talk show Strong Heart (2012-2013), the male reality survival show Produce X 101 (2019), and his own talk show Lee Dong Wook Wants to Talk (2019), Happy New Year (2021).

Lee Dong-wook debuted in 1999 in a one-episode MBC drama after winning the grand prize at the V-NESS modeling competition that same year.[1][2] The drama's director saw Lee and invited him to star in the teen drama series School No. 2.[3][4] Lee began to gain recognition through School No. 3.[5]

Lee rose to stardom after starring in the 2005 romantic comedy My Girl.[6] The drama series became a hit both domestically and throughout Asia, and made Lee a star of the Hallyu Wave.[7][8] That same year, he entered Jungbu University, majoring in media and broadcasting.[9]

Since then, he has starred in the films Bittersweet (2008),[10] the legal drama Partners (2009),[11][12] the melodrama Scent of a Woman (2011),[13] the baseball rom-com Killing Romance (2012),[14][15] the thriller Heaven's Command (2013),[16][17] and the drama Hotel King (2014), in which he reunited with My Girl co-star Lee Da-hae.[18][19] He then starred in the fantasy series Iron Man (2014) and the romance drama Chewing Bubblegum (2015).[20][21]

Lee Dong-wook and comedian Shin Dong-yup hosted the talk show Strong Heart from April 2012 to January 2013.[22][23][24][25][26][27] Lee also joined the reality show Neighbors, which aired from 2014 to 2015.[28][29]

From 2016 to 2017, Lee Dong-wook starred alongside Gong Yoo in Kim Eun-sook's romance drama Goblin, playing the grim reaper.[30] The drama was a hit, and with its success, helped revive Lee's acting career.[31][32]

In 2018, Lee starred in the medical drama Life as a doctor working in the emergency room.[33][34]

In 2019, Lee starred in the romantic comedy Reaching Sincerity, playing a workaholic lawyer.[35][36] That same year, he was confirmed as the host of the fourth season of Produce X 101.[37] He then played a dentist, the main antagonist, in the thriller Strangers from Hell.[38]

He also began hosting his own talk show, Lee Dong Wook Wants to Talk, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his debut.[39][40]

In 2020, Lee was cast in the fantasy drama The Story of the Nine-Tailed Fox as a nine-tailed fox (gumiho), who was formerly a mountain spirit and now works as a civil servant. The series has been renewed for a second season.[41] He was also confirmed to appear in the romantic comedy Alone in Seoul alongside Lim Soo Jung.

In 2021, he starred in Kwak Chae-yong's romantic comedy Happy New Year.[42] That same year, he starred in the iQIYI original drama Bad and Crazy, which aired in December 2021.[43]

In 2023, Lee Dong Wook returned to the role of the gumiho in the drama "Story of the Nine-Tailed Fox 1938." His character must go back in time to retrieve stolen valuable items from the present.

Military service edit Lee Dong Wook enlisted in the military in August 2009 and served in the National Defense Public Relations Service. He was discharged in June 2011.

Origin edit His parents are mostly of Korean descent. In an episode of Wook Talk that aired on January 22, 2020, guest and forensic science professor Yoo Seon-ho revealed the results of the actor's genealogical DNA analysis. According to the results, a significant portion of Lee's mother's genetic makeup matches that of the Koryaks and Khakassians, both ethnic groups indigenous to Siberia, namely Kamchatka and Khakassia, respectively.

Lee Dong-wook was selected as an honorary ambassador for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. On January 12, the actor attended the appointment ceremony at the Taepyeongno Press Center in Seoul.[71]
