Draco Lucius Malfoy

Draco Lucius Malfoy was a pure-blood wizard and the only son of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy. As the son of a Death Eater, Draco was raised to believe strongly in the importance of blood purity; if he met a Muggle-born, he looked down on them. He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1991 to 1998 and was Sorted into Slytherin House. During his years at Hogwarts, he befriended Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, Pansy Parkinson, Blaise Zabini, Theodore Nott, and other fellow Slytherins, while he quickly developed a rivalry with Harry Potter. He was appointed a prefect of his house and was a member of the Inquisition Squad during his fifth year, but at the end of that year his father was imprisoned in Azkaban following the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. Draco was taken in by Lord Voldemort, which proved to be a failure for Lucius, and became a Death Eater at the age of sixteen, but quickly became disillusioned with the lifestyle. Draco was unable to complete his task - the assassination of Albus Dumbledore, which was taken over by Severus Snape - and only performed his duties out of fear and reluctance. He and his family defected hours before the end of the Second Wizarding War in order to avoid imprisonment in Azkaban after Voldemort's defeat, and he owed Harry a life debt after saving him from the raging fire started by Crabbe in the Room of Requirement. After a few years, Draco married Astoria Greengrass.

According to the author's text, Draco dedicates himself to researching alchemy, becoming an alchemist, but far from creating a philosopher's stone, he seeks to find solutions to magical problems.

Draco is described as a tall, thin boy with a pale, pointed face, straight blond hair, and ice-grey eyes.

Draco is the prototypical spoiled rich brat; he believes his family's wealth and social standing entitle him to bully those poorer than him, such as Ron Weasley. He also disdains Hermione Granger's Muggle-born status by referring to her as a Mudblood, a term which, as Hagrid said, is not used in civil conversation. As Rowling explained in 1999, "He's a bigot and a bully, and as I say, in the most refined sense, he knows exactly what will hurt people."[2]

In a July 2005 interview, Rowling added that Draco, unlike Harry, never feels remorse for his actions: "I thought of Draco as someone who is very capable of isolating his life from his emotions, and he always has. So he let go of feeling pity, which enabled him to intimidate more effectively. He shut himself off from pity – how else would he become a Death Eater?"

Draco, like Dudley Dursley, was indoctrinated into his parents' beliefs. Rowling commented that "the moment Draco finally achieved what he thought he wanted, to become a Death Eater, and Lord Voldemort gave him a mission, as he did in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, he was hit hard by reality" because his dream was "so different." Rowling also stated that there was a real moral cowardice in Draco, but that he was not entirely evil.[8]

The Malfoy family is one of the few remaining pure-blood wizarding clans in the Harry Potter series, and one of the wealthiest. The anti-Muggle editor Brutus Malfoy is their ancestor. Lucius Malfoy was a Death Eater during both Wizarding Wars. He married Narcissa Black, and together they had a son, Draco, who is the first member of the Malfoy family introduced in the series. The Malfoys are related to the Black family through Narcissa (a first cousin of Sirius Black, Harry's godfather), making Draco the nephew of Bellatrix Lestrange and Andromeda Tonks. Draco is also a first cousin of Nymphadora Tonks through their mothers. Three of Draco's grandparents are identified: Abraxas Malfoy, Cygnus Black, and Druella Rosier. Abraxas died before the series begins and was a friend of Professor Slughorn. Draco is therefore the descendant of two ancient wizarding families. The Malfoy family home, Malfoy Manor, is an elegant mansion located in Wiltshire, in western England. They were cared for by Dobby the house-elf until the end of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The Malfoys are a wealthy family respected in the wizarding world, primarily due to Lucius' influence at Hogwarts and the Ministry of Magic, gained primarily from his monetary donations to the Ministry and St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, as well as his position on the Hogwarts Board of Governors as President. However, he was removed from his position at the end of the second book and imprisoned in Azkaban following the battle in the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix . Despite maintaining a respectable, but false, image prior to these events, some in the wizarding world were previously aware that the Malfoys were devoted to Voldemort and the Dark Arts. Draco consistently uses his elitist status and his father's name and influence to gain advantages and threaten others. Lucius is also known to have used bribes and threats.
