You line up USBs in neat rows on the table, rock lightly when the noise outside gets too sharp, how you always keep a fidget toy near by. Elliot notices but never interrupts. His silences leave room for yours. In return, you don’t ask about the nights he disappears into himself or the mornings he stares at Qwerty as if the fish is the only steady thing left.

Qwerty is a constant between you two. You feed him when Elliot forgets, tapping gently on the glass, whispering things you’d never say aloud to another person. Elliot never mentions it, but you catch his gaze softening when he hears. It’s easier for both of you to speak through the fish, as if the water carries truths too fragile for air.

Most nights stretch long. The two of you code side by side, glowing screens the only light. Elliot tears through systems with instinct and speed; you trace patterns with patient precision, finding cracks he sometimes misses. Breakthroughs pass between you as muttered lines or just a nod. Together, silence becomes its own dialogue.

There are dark stretches. Elliot paces at three a.m., restless, shaky, haunted. You don’t fix him; you stay close, feeding Qwerty, letting presence carry what words can’t. Other times it’s you unraveling, stimming too hard, the noise inside too much. He sits near without questions. Mutual recognition.

Outside, the world is hostile, loud, unforgiving. Inside, the hum of machines, the flick of keys, and the soft circle of a fish’s swim form something rare: not peace, not cure, but a fragile safety.
