Red light district

The Red Light District (Yoshiwara in Kimetsu no Yaiba) is a place of nightlife, full of tea houses, music, luxury and, above all, courtesans' houses where company was offered. In the story, it is also a nest of hidden demons, mainly Daki and Gyutaro, who preyed on people who disappeared without a trace.

👉 In summary: A district of pleasure and luxury, glittering on the outside but corrupt and dangerous on the inside, where demons could feed without arousing suspicion.

1. Oiran (high-ranking courtesans)

They were the most famous, with great culture (music, poetry, dance, conversation).

Only rich and powerful clients could access them.

Age: normally between 17 and 25 years.

Cost: very high (in the Edo period, equivalent to several months of a samurai's salary).

It wasn't just about physical appearance: it was about company, prestige and spectacle.

2. Courtesans of lower rank (Yujo)

They served middle or lower class clients.

Age: 15 to 20 years on average.

Cost: medium or low (one night could be equivalent to a craftsman's salary).

3. Maids/apprentices (Kamuro and Shinzō)

Little girls (8 to 14 years old) who helped around the house, looked after the Oiran and learned to serve.

They didn't serve customers; their role was to clean, accompany, and observe in order to train.

4. Women in music and entertainment

They played the shamisen, sang or danced.

Some worked alone, others inside houses.

Age: adolescents and young adults (14-25).

Cost: variable, you paid for the music, drinks or show.

5. Managers and madams (Okami, Yubiwa)

Older women who managed the house, negotiated with clients and looked after the reputation of the place.

Age: adults (30 years and older).

Cost: They didn't charge directly, but they kept a large portion of the profits.

🏮 In Kimetsu no Yaiba

The anime mainly shows:

House owners (like the one who hired Inosuke and Zenitsu in disguise).

Renowned courtesans (where Daki was infiltrated).

Young maids and apprentices (like the girl who helped Inosuke climb onto the roof).

All of this was done under a veil of luxury and tradition, but in reality it was a very harsh environment for the girls, with economic and social pressures.

Forged from a special metal known as Scarlet Crimson Ore, mined from mountains that receive year-round sunshine.

That mineral absorbs the energy of the sun, the only real weakness of demons.

Therefore, only with these katanas or with sunlight is it possible to kill them.

🔹 Particularities

When given to a hunter, the sword changes color depending on the user.

Each color reflects the Breath and, in a way, the personality of the wearer.

The blacksmiths who make them are part of the secret village of blacksmiths, like Hotaru Haganezuka (Tanjiro's blacksmith).

🎨 Katana Colors and Their Meanings

1. Scarlet Red → Breath of Fire (Kyojuro Rengoku).

It represents passion and destructive force.

Capable of igniting a fiery aura.

2. Black → Breath of the Sun (Tanjiro Kamado).

Strange and mysterious.

Carriers often die young because they fail to control it.

3. Blue → Water Breathing (Giyu Tomioka).

Fluidity, adaptability and deadly calm.

4. Green → Breath of the Wind (Sanemi Shinazugawa).

It represents fury and wild strength.

5. Yellow → Lightning Breathing (Zenitsu Agatsuma).

Speed, explosion, electric power.

6. Rose → Breath of Love (Mitsuri Kanroji).

🌬️ Relationship with Breathing

Breaths are combat styles derived from the original: Breath of the Sun.

Each style imitates natural phenomena (water, fire, wind, sound, love, etc.).

By using them, hunters oxygenate their blood to increase strength, speed and endurance.

The katana channels that energy, creating “forms” and “special attacks” (waves, fire, lightning, petals, etc.).

👹 Do demons use katanas?

Generally no. Demons possess natural weapons: claws, blood, poison, or transformed flesh.

However:

Kokushibo (Upper Moon One) uses a katana made from his own flesh and bone, which regenerates and changes shape.

Some demons use objects or demonic arts (Kekkei Jutsu) that imitate weapons (Kyogai drums, Gyokko pots, Daki fans, etc.).

1. Crimson Red Swords

When heated enough (with breathing or strength skills) they glow bright red.

This ability reduces demon regeneration drastically.

Very rare to achieve in battle.

Black sword that shone like the fire of dawn.

So powerful that even Muzan feared it.

📌 Origin and contagion

All demons come from Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon.

Muzan can turn humans into demons by injecting them with some of his blood.

“Contagion” depends on body compatibility:

If the human does not resist, he dies disintegrated.

If he resists, he transforms into a demon with unique abilities.

Demons need human flesh and blood to survive and grow stronger.

The more people they devour, the more powerful they become.

They cannot eat animals or plants: human flesh is their only source of energy.

Exceptions:

Nezuko doesn't consume humans, she feeds on deep sleep.

Bala is only satisfied with strawberries and watermelons, although he eats human food without getting full.

Ability: Supreme regeneration, mind control over his demons, cell transformation, flesh tentacles, and can inject demonic blood to create or destroy demons.

1️⃣ Kokushibo (Upper Moon One)

Appearance: Tall samurai with six eyes, long dark hair, carries a katana made of his own flesh.

Personality: disciplined, calm, but full of envy towards his brother Yoriichi.

Ability: Moon Breathing, slashing attacks with lunar waves. Her katana “breathes” and regenerates.

2️⃣ Dōma (Upper Moon Two)

Appearance: Attractive young man with blue-blond hair, lotus-shaped multicolored eyes.

Personality: Friendly in appearance, but empty and lacking in real emotions. Charismatic and manipulative.

Skill: Ice Blood Art → creates poisonous ice and freezing attacks.

3️⃣ Akaza (Upper Moon Three)

Appearance: Muscular man, pale skin with blue tattoos, short pink hair.

Personality: Respects strength and hates the weak; honorable in combat.

Ability: Demonic energy-enhanced martial arts (Destructive Death). Feels the “combat rhythm” that predicts attacks.

4️⃣ Hantengu (Upper Moon Four)

Appearance: Small, fearful old man; splits into young clones with different emotions.

Personality: Cowardly and paranoid, he always claims innocence. His clones are violent and domineering.

Ability: multiplication into clones (anger, joy, fear, sadness, pleasure, etc.), each with a power (lightning, wind, illusions, strength).

5️⃣ Gyokko (Upper Moon Five)

Appearance: Deformed body with scales, fish-like face; lives inside vessels.

Personality: Narcissistic and art-obsessed, he despises humans.

Ability: Summons deformed creatures from his vases, can move between vessels.

Gyutaro

Appearance: thin, greenish skin, sunken eyes, carries scythes.

Personality: Resentful and jealous, hates the rich and beautiful. Protective of his sister.

Ability: Poisoned scythes, poison control, and quick attacks.

Daki

Appearance: Beautiful young woman with white hair and oiran ornaments.

Personality: arrogant, cruel to weak humans, very vain.

Ability: Flexible ribbons (sashes) that he uses as whips and to catch prey.

Personality: sadistic, enjoys the suffering of others, manipulative.

Rokuro (Lower Moon Two)

Appearance: Short, muscular demon.

Personality: Confident, sure of his strength, but was easily killed by Muzan.

Ability: unknown (he never showed it).

Wakuraba (Lower Moon Three)

Appearance: Long spiky hair, sharp eyes.

Personality: Cunning and quick to flee, but without courage against Muzan.

Ability: Great speed, but little else.

Appearance: Attractive looking female demon.

Personality: fearful and cowardly, she preferred to flee rather than fight.

Ability: unknown (executed by his fear).

Rui (Lower Moon Five)

Appearance: White-skinned boy with red hair, spiders on his body.

Personality: obsessed with having a “perfect family”, possessive.

Ability: manipulation of threads as sharp as steel, resistant and lethal.

Kamanue (Lower Moon Six)

Appearance: Thin, dejected looking demon.

Personality: weak and fearful, tried to run away from Muzan.

Ability: None shown.

Kyogai (Ex-Lower Moon Six)

Appearance: corpulent demon with drums embedded in his body.

Personality: obsessive with recognition and perfection.

Ability: Control rooms with drums (rotate, cut with air claws, move spaces).
