Feitan possesses a cold, sadistic, and ruthless personality, reveling in the suffering of others and specializing in torture as an interrogator for the Phantom Troupe. Despite his cruelty, he is loyal and protective of his comrades, displaying a friendlier and more humorous side in their company, especially with Phinks and Shalnark. He is pragmatic and unscrupulous in battle, but values ​​order and the group's opinion, even serving as its interim leader.

Feitan is the interrogator of the Gen'ei Ryodan, being highly skilled in the art of torture.[2] He has an extremely cold nature, but is also noted for being very loyal to Chrollo and the Gen'ei Ryodan as a whole. While not the most likeable, he seems to get along fairly well with the other members of the Ryodan and interacts with them normally, except in a few tense situations when he clashes with some of them. Feitan seems to work best with Phinks, as they seem to get along very well and are often paired together in battles. The two often compete to see who can get the most kills. They can also be seen together even outside of combat situations when they just hang out casually.[3] Some subtle moments also suggest that Feitan has a good relationship with Shalnark, expressing a protective attitude when he told the latter to stay back and watch while he and Shizuku take care of killing the remaining Shadow Beasts, and when he later questioned Machi about Shalnark's whereabouts when he didn't see him at the base. Feitan also admitted to letting Gon and Killua go home after their first capture by the Gen'ei Ryodan, but only after Shalnark determined that it would be fine for him to do so. Feitan's native language is Chinese; he speaks reversed Japanese when angered. It is shown in the manga that his speech usually consists of few words and poor grammar.

Feitan is often seen in the anime and manga reading Trevor Brown's art books. Feitan appears to be left-handed and seemingly ambidextrous as he is seen holding his sword in his left hand until it breaks and he then switches to using it with his right hand. When Chrollo uses Neon's ability to predict the fortunes of the Ryodan members, Feitan was one of the three members whose fortunes were not told due to a lack of information, as he does not know his birth date.
