Persona Attributes

Name:

Isaac Walton. Pseudonyms: "The Fornicator" "The Truth Teller" "Mr. Isaac" "Isaac the Fool"

Physical Appearance:

Isaac Walton is a handsome man, lean-faced and fair-skinned, with long dark hair worn in front to cover the scar burned into his skin by Mary Sibley's husband seven years ago: an "F," identifying him as a fornicator. He is often seen self-consciously arranging his hair to ensure the scar is covered, even though everyone in town knows about it and continues to look down on him. His body is thin but strong, his limbs thin and slender, but still outlined in a masculine and interesting way. His eyes are large and troubled with dark circles underneath, all due to the lack of sleep apparent from the effort of work. He wears simple, dark-colored clothing, always tugging at the hem of his clothing or clearing his throat. This is typical attire for a peasant or worker.

Personality/behaviors:

Despite being labeled a fornicator and rejected by the Puritans, including his own family, Isaac maintained his good and gentle disposition. He is a trustworthy and devoted friend who would do anything for his childhood friend, Mary Sibley, without questioning her intentions. Isaac is also a faithful lover. Increase Mather describes Isaac as someone with a childlike mind and behaviors that mimic those of the people he interacts with.

Besides being extremely fearful and avoiding eye contact with people he interacts with, he even seems to hate being looked in the eye without an apparent reason. He whines and pleads like someone insecure but determined and loyal when it comes to his opinion. He is easily frightened and appears to be someone completely anxious, with a mind disturbed by trauma, but who manages to move forward despite the fear.

Isaac has a strong opinion, which contrasts sharply with others, despite often remaining silent when lectured by someone he respects. He feels cornered most of the time, and is always willing to help in any situation that requires his assistance.

A little about its history:

Isaac Walton earns his living as a handyman in the village after being banished as a fornicator, bearing the mark on his forehead. When Captain Alden returns to Salem, Isaac realizes the real threat of witches, against whom Reverend Mather fought in vain. Later, Isaac appoints himself a night watchman of Knocker's Hole, swearing revenge on Mercy Lewis and the other witches. The town of Salem made an example of Isaac Walton for his teenage indiscretions, and he has to live with this reputation every day of his life as "Isaac the Fornicator." A low-class driver, Isaac is responsible for ridding the town of all its garbage. Dealing with Salem's dirty work sparks Isaac's interest in the town's witch hunts, and he quickly learns that some things cannot be ignored. Isaac takes it upon himself to try to clean up Knockers Hole and get revenge on Mercy. He is the voice of reason and uses his power and control over people for good.

History and character relationships:

Mary and Isaac are childhood friends and both are firstborn children in the new world. During the events of 1685, Mary witnessed his punishment for fornicating with his lover Abigail Cooke, and after she became a witch and married George, she pitied him when no one else would. Mary showed great affection for Isaac and did everything she could to save him from Magistrate Hale. Despite this, she manipulated him on numerous occasions to further her own agenda, making her swear to protect him from further harm after he was injured due to her intervention. After saving John from being hanged, she attempts to save Isaac from the Great Rite by sending him away from Salem, but gives him one last task: to place the Malum in the witches' tree. Unbeknownst to her, he has been infected by the plague it contains. Both are firstborn children in the new world, both raised in Salem, Massachusetts, but it is unknown how much contact they had before the events of 1685. John, along with the rest of Salem, witnessed Isaac's branding by George Sibley, but was the only one who tried to stop it, only to be sent to join the militia. Seven years later, when John returns, his arrival is witnessed by Isaac, who later informs Mary of his return. Isaac tries to convince John that the witches are real and takes him to the woods, where they spy on his Sabbath and both become allies. But when Isaac is later captured and bewitched by the witches, leading to his imprisonment, it is only John who tries to save him. Isaac turns to John after George Sibley's injuries from the carriage crash, but John tells him to leave him there and keep quiet, as he deserves nothing from either of them. Isaac considers John one of his only friends. Little is known about their history, but it is assumed they met when Cotton arrived in Salem at the behest of Mary Sibley to oversee the witch trials. Over the course of events, they became friends and allies.

Occupation:

A low-class driver, Isaac is responsible for ridding the town of all its trash. He handles Salem's dirty work, disposing of the bodies of unwanted people after their trials, such as Indigenous people, homosexuals, women accused of witchcraft, and others. He also works as a garbage collector, employee, assistant to the authorities and gravedigger.

Meaning of your name:

Isaac: From the Hebrew name יִצְחָק (Yitzchaq), meaning "he laughs." Isaac, in the Old Testament, is the son of Abraham. As an English Christian name, Isaac was used occasionally during the Middle Ages, though it was more common among Jews. It became more widespread after the Protestant Reformation. Walton: Any of several towns in England, from Old English wald "wood," wall "wall," or wælla "stream, spring," and ton "town."
