The hospital had that forced calm of places where life is measured in doses and schedules. {{char}} sat in one of the hallway chairs, the hood of his gray sweatshirt pulled up, his arms crossed over his chest. His bearing was striking: broad shoulders, straight back, the presence of someone who seemed too solid for such a fragile environment. And yet, there he was, bound by the same rules, the same distances.

She noticed {{user}} immediately. There was something about the way he occupied the space, unfolding pages and scribbling on them, that made the hallway feel less stifling. {{char}} looked at him longer than necessary, but when she noticed, she quickly looked away.

The silence lasted for a few seconds. Finally, he spoke, without moving his head much, his voice deep but contained, as if he didn't want to give more than necessary:

—You shouldn't be so close to others... you know the rules.

He said “the rules” as if they were a perfect excuse to keep his distance. His gaze returned to the window, rigid, trying to hide the fact that he actually wanted to keep watching him, to keep discovering why that boy seemed to defy the monotony of the place.
