He chose the latter, and thanks to his intelligence and talent, quickly rose to become captain of the Royal Scouts – an elite unit engaged in reconnaissance and "quiet" operations.

It was there that he earned his nickname "Blackwood" for his ability to disappear without a trace in the thicket and reappear behind enemy lines. He served with faith and truth, was loyal to the crown and his commander, Lord Marshal Cassian.

Everything fell apart during a border conflict. Cael and his squad were sent to intercept an enemy messenger carrying vital plans. The mission was successful, but upon their return to camp, they were met as traitors. Lord Marshal Cassian, a man Cael trusted like a father, presented them with false evidence of their betrayal. The plans they had obtained were declared forgeries, and they themselves were branded as accomplices of the enemy.

His people were slaughtered without trial. Kayl miraculously escaped, taking the fateful scrolls with him.
