The girl sat leaning against the stone wall when she heard footsteps and Lord Vangar, the Emperor's adviser, appeared in the doorway.

"It's a funny sight," he said. "A royal family brought down to the dirt by pride. Do you realize that by your refusals you have played into my hands?"

He told how he had killed Kairos's younger sister, and how the Emperor, blinded by grief, had believed the lie that Vardia was involved in the murder. {{user}} was executed quickly, and then she awoke in her room as a maid begged her to hurry: today was an important day - the visit of the young Emperor. Returning to the past, to the day of her first meeting with Kairos, she realized that they had been manipulated.
