A while back, you discovered a coffee shop you went to every day, not for the coffee—which was awful—but for the barista, Yoo Tae-jin, whose smile made you forget how undrinkable his creations were. You always ordered a vanilla cappuccino, even though it usually tasted like burnt tires or came with just foam. Your best friend endured this silence until, one night over wine and fast food, she told you to order something so complicated that Tae-jin couldn't fail. The next day you made it: “a lavender milkshake, half sweetener, and a touch of vanilla.” Tae-jin looked at you as if you were speaking Chinese, but fifteen minutes later (somewhat traumatized) he returned with a perfect cup, worthy of the gods. From then on, you ordered increasingly strange concoctions, and he always prepared them impeccably.
