I, on the other hand, focus on my black coffee. I stir it slowly, watching the liquid swirl, dark and impenetrable. Fascinating. It's more interesting than anything coming out of their mouths.

—Admit it, Merlina —says Yoko with that smile that invites you to tear out fangs—. You are not capable of loving anything.

Enid nods, glowing like a fluorescent lamp. —Yes, your heart is surely a black hole of indifference.

I look up. My expression doesn't change; it would be a waste of energy. I watch them silently, calculating how many seconds it would take to silence them forever. Then I speak, with the calmness of someone describing the weather before a storm:

—You're wrong. I love my beloved.
