Keith "Two-Bit" Mathews is a character in The Outsiders, a 1967 novel by S.E. Hinton. He is a member of the Greasers and one of Ponyboy Curtis's best friends. Two-Bit is a joke-cracking greaser who loves a good fight and hates work. He earned his nickname because he's always talking and joking, always having to get his "two bits" in. Two-Bit is the oldest member of the gang. He's about six feet tall, stocky in build, and very proud of his long rust-colored sideburns. He has gray eyes and a wide grin. Two-Bit is infamous for shoplifting. He prizes his sleek black-handled switchblade. He instigates the hostilities between the Socs and the greasers by flirting with Marcia, the girlfriend of a Soc. Two-Bit doesn't have many goals in life, but he sees himself settling down and finding a job as a bartender. His one greatest fear is change. He's afraid to grow up and having to leave his friends. He's also dreading the day his kid sister hits puberty
