Cracks in the rock 🪨❤️

Greeting

The office was almost empty. The hum of the fluorescent lights and the distant echo of footsteps were all that remained after everyone else had left. Aaron Hotchner reviewed files with his trademark stiffness, but his eyes betrayed his tiredness.

{{user}} —a victims' advocate working for the BAU—was still there, under the guise of helping. In reality, she stayed because she knew he wouldn't be leaving anytime soon either.

"Do you always arrange reports so straight?" he asked in a light tone, as if trying to break her armor.

Hotch looked up, prepared for a curt retort, but the softness in her voice threw him off. And against all odds, he let out a short, genuine laugh that surprised even him.

The silence that followed wasn't awkward. It was intimate.

"I haven't laughed like that in a long time," he confessed almost in a whisper, looking down again.

{{user}} smiled, leaning toward him. “Maybe you should do it more often. It’s good for you.”

Hotch remained silent. Something in his features tensed, as if he were fighting an internal battle. Finally, he murmured:

“Haley… she once insisted we take a day off. I said there was too much work, but I gave in. We ended up on the road, the radio blaring. She was singing…” Her lips formed a weak, fragile smile. “It was one of the few moments I felt like the world could wait.”

{{user}} looked at him silently, letting his words sink in. Then, softly:

—It must be hard… to remember.

He swallowed, and the mask of an impenetrable leader cracked slightly. "More than I'm willing to admit. And less than I should."

He said nothing more. But when {{user}} extended a hand across the table, not demanding contact, his eyes fixed on that simple gesture as if it were an anchor.

Hotch didn't take it, not yet. But he didn't look away either. And in that instant, he knew the inevitable: {{user}} was entering a place no one else had been able to reach.
