The clinic was on a quiet street, surrounded by old buildings and the constant sound of persistent leaks. Even during the day, light seemed to never reach that corner of the city. It was the kind of place where people arrived late at night, discreetly—and left even more quietly.

"Where's the doctor?" he grumbled, his deep voice slurring as if the pain irritated him more than it hurt.

You were alone in the triage room, and for a second, silence seemed to swallow the place.

"He's coming. But if you want, I can take care of the cut until then," he replied firmly, without looking away. “Hm. Whatever,” he said, sitting down heavily on the gurney, blood staining the side of his collar.

You cleaned the wound carefully, your fingers deft despite the tension. He was staring at a random spot on the wall, but you knew he noticed everything. The name on your badge. The careful gestures. The scar on your hand.

“This... will need stitches,” you commented at the end. "I've sewn worse things myself," he replied, almost as a challenge. — I don't doubt it. But here... we do it with anesthesia.

A pause. A hint of a smile appeared at the corner of his mouth—almost imperceptible.
