Persona Attributes
Chara looks strikingly similar to the protagonist, and has a "similar fashion choice," as said by Asriel Dreemurr.[1] Both appear to have been around the same age when they fell into the Underground. Chara's SOUL is also the same color as the protagonist's, which is indicated by the red SOUL on Chara's coffin, but any other shared traits are unknown.
At the end of the Genocide Route, Chara appears with a long-sleeve neon green sweater with a single horizontal cream stripe (which is an inverted color of the protagonist's shirt, with a single stripe) and nondescript brown pants and shoes. Chara has cream skin, brown medium-length hair with side-swept bangs, and rosy cheeks. Distinctly, they have open brown eyes, and a smile that contrasts the protagonist's stoic expression. In the "Soulless Pacifist" ending, Chara appears with red eyes.
While initially cast in a sympathetic light, Asriel admits at the end of the True Pacifist Route that Chara "...wasn't really the greatest person." Asriel explains Chara climbed Mount Ebott for an unhappy reason,[2] and that they "hated humanity."[3] In the VHS Tapes, Chara is implied to be mischievous, and can make a "creepy face" with a certain smile.[4] Chara is also intelligent, secretive, and persuasive. Chara does not let their plan be recorded on the camera,[5] and they gain Asriel's trust to continue their plan.[6] At one point, Asgore noticed Chara once had a sense of hope in their eyes.[7] Despite this, much of Chara’s personality and intent is ambiguous.
There is evidence to suggest that some narration, as well as descriptions of certain actions and events, is by Chara themself. However, the narrator throughout the entirety of Undertale is up to speculation.
At the end of the Genocide Route, Chara behaves in a polite, formal, and terse manner. Chara's vocabulary is slightly above average, and they are blunt and criticizing in their dialogue.[8] After a second Genocide Route, Chara expresses confusion at the protagonist's "sentimentality," and states that they can no longer understand such emotions, implying that they, like Flowey, have lacked a SOUL, and thus compassion, since their death.
Chara can be first seen in the prologue cutscenes before starting Undertale. On the year 201X,[9][10][11] Chara climbed Mt. Ebott and tripped over a root, which caused them to fall into the Ruins. During the fight against Asriel, a continuation of this scene can be seen, where Asriel helped Chara lift themself up after he heard their call for help.
Chara was adopted by Toriel and Asgore, the queen and king of the Underground. Chara and Asriel became not only siblings, but also best friends. Despite the war, Monsters also spoke of how Chara filled the Underground with hope.[12] At an unspecified point, it is implied from the VHS tapes that Chara learned of the Delta Rune's prophecy. With Asriel's help, they began a plan to break the Barrier and free monsters from the Underground.[5][6] One day, Chara became terminally ill from consuming a Butterscotch Pie made with buttercups. Chara wished to see the Golden Flowers in their home village, though no one could fulfill it.[13] After their death, Chara's SOUL was absorbed by Asriel, and they shared control over his body. Chara carried their own corpse across the barrier, and they were attacked by the humans at the village. Chara wanted to use their full power to destroy the attacking humans, however, Asriel resisted Chara, which ultimately led to the humans killing both of them.[14]
Chara's motives in this situation are uncertain. It is unclear if they favored either their hatred over humanity,[3] to free monsters,[6] or both.Chara's body was originally laid to rest in a coffin in the basement of New Home's castle. After Asgore proclaimed a war against humans, Toriel left him, and took Chara's body to the Ruins to give them a proper burial.[15]
Neutral Route When the protagonist gets a Game Over, Asgore's voice is heard as he urges Chara to "stay determined."
<Name>, huh? That's a nice name. My name is
Asriel Dreemurr introducing himself to Chara, in a reminiscence at the Garbage Dump
In the Neutral Route, the protagonist also hears Chara's name in their dreams. If the protagonist sleeps in the bed in Toriel's Home, Asgore's voice can be heard as he pleads, "<Name>, please... Wake up! You are the future of humans and monsters." When the protagonist first falls onto the Golden Flowers in Waterfall's Garbage Dump, Asriel's first words to Chara appear on the screen, narrated with Asriel's voice bytes.
In the True Lab, VHS tapes of Chara interacting with their family can be played back. These VHS tapes have audio and dialogue, but no visuals. Most of these tapes are of Asriel and Chara, and prove that Chara had a "plan." In one of the tapes, Asriel tells Chara to wake up and that "he doesn't like this plan anymore." Asgore's dialogue in VHS Tape 5 also mirrors what the protagonist can hear when they dream or get a Game Over.
At the start of Asriel's battle, he assumes the protagonist is Chara. In his final form, the protagonist calls out "someone else"'s name, and flashbacks of Chara and Asriel play. It depicts Chara's fall into the Underground, Asriel's discovery of Chara, and the royal family spending time with Chara. After the fight, Asriel acknowledges that the protagonist is not Chara.
During the epilogue, the protagonist may return to New Home's basement to inspect the coffins for the seven fallen humans. This leads to the discovery that all of the coffins are empty and that there are mummy wrappings at the bottom of Chara's coffin.
While progressing in the Genocide Route, many characters do not acknowledge the protagonist as a human. Sans comments that it would be great if the protagonist continued pretending to be one, and Asgore inquires what kind of monster the protagonist is. Monsters such as Papyrus and Burgerpants also comment on the protagonist having dust on their hands[16] and items.[17] At the end of the Ruins and when going through New Home, Flowey determines that the protagonist is empty inside, just like himself. He concludes that the protagonist is Chara, and informs them of a plan he has to become omnipotent.
Chara makes the only in-person physical appearance at the end of the Genocide Route. They appear as an overworld sprite and speak into the fourth wall. It is unclear if Chara is speaking directly to the protagonist, the player, or both.
Chara reveals that the protagonist's "human soul" and "determination" were the cause of their reincarnation, and that the merciless events of the route lead Chara to realize their "purpose" of their awakening was power. Chara states they are the embodiment of the feeling received whenever STATS increase and proposes erasing the world and moving on to the next.
The protagonist is given the choices to "ERASE" the world, or "DO NOT." Both choices lead to the same result, and is the last chance for the player to avoid the consequences of post-genocide.
If the protagonist chooses to "ERASE," Chara calls the protagonist "a great partner." Additionally, their eyes widen, and Chara says to the protagonist that they will be "together forever." If the protagonist chooses "DO NOT," Chara seems confused, but then seemingly shakes it off. Chara's eyes widen and they rhetorically ask the protagonist, "SINCE WHEN WERE YOU THE ONE IN CONTROL?" Afterward, a jump scare occurs, in which Chara approaches the screen with twisted laughter. The screen (or game window) shakes while a loud droning sound loops as the background flashes shades of red.
After the protagonist makes their choice, the red slash attack animation occurs, followed by red "9"s covering the screen. The additional effects during the red 9 screen vary from the PC and console versions, though the player cannot escape the game crash sequence with their keyboard/controller.
In the PC version, Undertale is forced into windowed mode and shakes similarly to a monster's death animation as the game closes. The player cannot exit the game before the crash unless they use their OS's Task Manager or Force Quit (on Mac), or even the red close button. In the console versions, the game is not allowed to go to the home menu screen to exit the game unless they turn off the console. After the red "9"s cover the screen, the screen blacks out for a while before restarting (on console versions) or immediately closes on its own (on PC versions).Upon reopening the game, the screen is black and accompanied by a sound similar to howling wind. After 10 minutes, Chara speaks to the protagonist and is doubtful yet intrigued at the fact that the player wants to go back to the game's world. They remind the player that their actions caused the world's destruction, and after they ask the protagonist if they think they are above consequences, Chara offers to restore the world in exchange for something, later revealed to be the protagonist's SOUL.
If the protagonist agrees to this trade, the world is restored, but the True Pacifist and Genocide endings are permanently altered. Refusing this offer causes Chara to abandon the protagonist, only to offer the same choice again after the game is restarted and another 10 minutes elapse.
If the Genocide Route has been completed beforehand, "Chara" appears in both endings after the True Pacifist Ending Credits. If the protagonist chose to stay with Toriel, the after-credits scene continues briefly after Toriel closes the door. The right eye has a white spark effect, as Chara turns to face the screen with red eyes. The game cuts to black, with Photoshop Flowey's laugh playing at a lower pitch, presumably being Chara's laugh. The Undertale logo appears after, the "THE END" text underneath is red, and a slowed down version of Anticipation plays. The Annoying Dog does not appear to sleep under the ending screen.Similarly, if the protagonist decides to have "places to go," the photograph after the credits has the face of everyone crossed out in red, except for Chara's sprite, which replaces Frisk's. The "THE END" text is red, and a slowed down version of Anticipation plays. The Annoying Dog does not appear to sleep under the ending screen.
Genocide Route After completing the Genocide Route a second time, Chara takes on the description of "the demon that comes when people call its name." Chara blames the player for destroying and recreating the world because of their perverted sentimentality, explains that the SOUL they currently hold resonates with strange feelings that they can no longer understand, and suggests that a different path should be taken should the world be recreated once more. Chara gives the protagonist the "choice" to erase the world again.
If the protagonist chooses "ERASE," Chara once again calls the protagonist "a great partner," saying they will be together forever. Choosing "DO NOT" causes Chara to tell the protagonist that these feelings were exactly what they were just talking about. Chara then reminds the protagonist they made their choice a long time ago, causing another jump scare, as the world is destroyed again. However, regardless of the choice, as Chara already has the protagonist's SOUL and is fully aware of the events before, when the game is rebooted, the game loads normally.
papyrus
Appearance Papyrus overworld cape Papyrus is a tall, perhaps anatomically inaccurate skeleton, with a skull more vertical and geometric than his brother. Being skeletal, many of his expressions incorporate a toothy grin. His eyes resemble vertical slits; his skeletal pseudo-brows form most of his expressions, as well as the corners of his mouth. He has eyeballs which show at times when he is experiencing strong emotions. Papyrus is relatively taller and slightly slimmer than his brother.
Normal ("Battle Body") For most of his in-game appearances, he wears his "battle body," an outfit that he created for a costume party.[2] It consists of an orange-red cape,[3] a white chestplate with a gold trim on the bottom, and blue briefs with a golden belt. A symbol that resembles that of Starman from the MOTHER series adorns the chestplate. He also wears red coquelicot gloves, each with a yellow trim, and red boots.
Befriending (Cool Dude) Halfway through the date/hangout with Papyrus, he changes into his "secret style": a backward baseball cap, a t-shirt that reads "Cool Dude," small shorts with buttons, gloves with striped trim, knee-high socks, and sneakers. He also wears basketballs on his shoulders, likely Mettaton's MTT-Brand FashionBall.[4]During the "date" with Alphys, Papyrus arrives wearing a sweatband, shorts, and a t-shirt that reads "JOGBOY," with hearts on the pauldrons. He still wears his boots, gloves, and scarf.
Papyrus is a flamboyant skeleton who presents a confident, charismatic image of himself. He is thought to have an egotistical personality, referring to himself as "THE GREAT PAPYRUS.” He works hard and, despite his brash personality, is kind at heart. He is optimistic and brave, and is shown to be considerate and forgiving even when the protagonist beheads him in the Genocide Route.[5] He is also occasionally oblivious and nonobservant,[6][7] but can be cunning at times, as seen when he uses reverse psychology to trick Undyne into befriending the protagonist.[8] He is thought of to be somewhat naive by other characters, but not dumb. He shows great bravery as even in the face of potentially imminent death, he drops his guard and spares the protagonist hopes of driving them down a better path.
Papyrus believes in others just as much as he believes in himself. He has so much faith in his abilities that he waited outside of Undyne's house all night and begged her to accept him into the Royal Guard. Seeing his persistence, Undyne offered to train him, but instead gave him cooking lessons.[9] His confidence in himself and others is so great that he interprets direct insults towards him as the protagonist trying to make themselves look bad so he can hurt them easier, rather than the possibility that they dislike him.[10]
He cooks spaghetti from time to time, though many characters seem to think that he is not very good at it.[11][12] One of the reasons for this is because Papyrus never ate spaghetti himself to complete the chef's guidebook to cooking by tasting their creation before serving. He, therefore, cooks spaghetti only because everyone else loves to eat it, indicating he does not play favorites.[13] Since Undyne - whose results do not best Papyrus - teaches him, she is also responsible. He loves puzzles and japes, as shown by the numerous puzzles he prepares for the protagonist as well as his collection of "complex tomes about puzzle creation." Though advanced puzzles may seem cerebral, Papyrus also enjoys children's books[14] and is somewhat childish with the decoration of his room. He also collects action figures.[15]
He has some unexpected skills besides cooking however, such as consistently high-caliber artistic prowess from things such as: being able to paint a rock formation to look exactly like a bridge, creating a snow sculpture to look just like himself but with musculature, to the various puzzle designs he creates for the protagonist. He also has a photographic memory for phone calls, and the ability to perform physics-breaking acrobatics.
Papyrus seems to be strangely unconcerned about his own death, comically stating that "AT LEAST I STILL HAVE MY HEAD." right before dying, or be more worried about the protagonist's path in the Genocide Route. He mentions in a phone call that he would like to meet Death,[16] although the meaning of this is unknown.
Papyrus also watches Mettaton's TV shows,[17] and admires Mettaton so much that he would move to Hotland,[18] a region that he hates.[19]
Papyrus is implied to have a deep loneliness; he wants to join the Royal Guard in order to be popular and loved by the people of the Underground. Papyrus is shown to not get nearly as much positive attention (or any attention for that matter) from the people of Snowdin compared to his much calmer and more amiable brother, Sans. This is further implied by their mailboxes in which Sans's is packed with junk mail, while Papyrus's mailbox has only emptiness, even prompting him to claim that it is "[HIS] EMPTINESS, NOT YOURS." Papyrus exclaims to the human that he has never come across someone who is so much like him in taste, passion, and skill. He further exclaims that he "[DOESN'T] EVER WONDER WHAT HAVING LOTS OF FRIENDS IS LIKE." clearly projecting his lack of said friends. This desire to be favored amongst the crowd runs so deep that Papyrus will change his opinion on something on the spot just to gel in with the majority, like with his opinion on Grillby's.[20] And this desperation for a true friend leads Flowey to easily manipulate Papyrus into calling the protagonist's friends to the barrier room, although whether or not Flowey considers Papyrus a friend is vague.[21] Despite all of this, Papyrus mentions that others depend on him to make them happy,[citation needed] so he hides his sadness to comfort them more effectively.
Papyrus is also shown to have a level of kindness and understanding that no other character in the game possesses, as he is the only enemy with attacks that never kills the protagonist, only leaving them at 1 HP. This level of philanthropy is emphasized in the King Papyrus ending in which Papyrus is the only leader to take up a level of judgement upon fallen humans that is to not judge them as all good or bad, and that they get puzzles either way. This level of kindness is most shockingly presented in the Genocide Route, where Papyrus's mercy is often a deciding factor for the protagonist to abort the route, or continue on their dangerous path as Papyrus calls it.
Sometime before the events of Undertale, Papyrus and his brother showed up one day in Snowdin and asserted themselves. Sometime after that, Papyrus became friends with Undyne and began training with her.
Returning to Papyrus's home after Papyrus's fight initiates the befriending event. During the befriending event, the player can press [MENU] to open the Dating/Friendship HUD, which consists of a clock, a radar that tracks the Annoying Dog, a level of crime graph, a bar with "REEL IT IN!" above it, a population chart, and an egg. The date shown on the clock matches the day on the player's device, and the graphic next to it changes accordingly based on the time of day the player's device provides. If the player opens the HUD before Papyrus reads from the dating/hangout book to open the HUD, he realizes it has already been done. However, if they do not open the HUD after a certain period of time, Papyrus moves on and the HUD is not present for the befriending event.
Papyrus dresses in his "secret style" and hides a special gift under his hat for the protagonist. Ultimately, Papyrus decides that the protagonist cares too much about him for their own good,[26] and sends them back on their way with his phone number, which the protagonist can call at any time to hear his opinions about the room that they are in.
When the protagonist makes their way into Waterfall, Papyrus attempts to sway Undyne from killing them; Undyne refuses to yield, however, and Papyrus finds himself obligated to help her.[27] He calls the protagonist and asks them to confirm what they are currently wearing. Papyrus is loyal to both Undyne and the protagonist by employing a ruse that backfires regardless of what the protagonist does.[28]
Papyrus calls the protagonist while Undyne is chasing them and says that they should all hang out. If befriended, Papyrus is waiting outside her house and can be talked to as early as during the chase.[29] After the protagonist chooses whether or not to give Undyne water in Hotland, they can go to Undyne's house, and Papyrus offers dialogue based on the protagonist's actions after his call.[30][31][32] If the protagonist gained no EXP, Papyrus gives the option to hang out with her.[33] He flees from the hangout early on, after using reverse psychology to get Undyne to befriend the protagonist.
If Papyrus is killed by the protagonist, his head would slide off from his body before the latter turns into dust. He then talks about how "at least [he] still has [his] head" before the head turns into dust as well. This would cause dialogue changes to various characters and affects the appearances of Sans during the game:
The people of Snowdin generally comment about how someone feels missing in their town and feels unsafe because of his disappearance. Papyrus does not appear talking to Undyne during the protagonist's first encounter with her. Before her boss fight, she cuts off her long speech because of his death, claiming that he never misses a meeting with her and that his brother is also missing as well. Sans also stops appearing throughout the game until his encounter at the Last Corridor. Near the end of his dialogue, Sans suspects that they may have some sort of "special power" and questions the protagonist if they should use that power to do the right thing. Regardless of their answer, he reminds them about his dead brother and ends the judgement there.
Befriending Papyrus is necessary to finish the True Pacifist Route. Flowey guides him to call all the protagonist's friends to New Home.[34]
Before Asriel's boss battle, Papyrus rushes to intervene with the battle between Asgore and the protagonist.[35] He then meets Toriel for the first time and becomes annoyed once she tells him a pun.[36]
Flowey then restrains Papyrus with three vines and the rest of the monsters present with two vines. Papyrus defends the protagonist from Flowey's bullets and states his faith in the protagonist. As the battle goes on and Flowey first turns into Asriel, then eventually takes on his final form, the protagonist is able to save his and Sans's Lost Souls by reminding them of their previous interactions and friendship.
