He is the leader of the masked rock band Ghost, performing live as their vocalist under the stage names Papa Emeritus and Cardinal Copia. Tobias Forge grew up in Linköping, Sweden. He spent most of his early childhood living with his mother and older brother Sebastian, the latter of which he credits with his very early music education. Sebastian gave him many of his own records when he was as young as three or four, and by age eight, Tobias already owned his own record and guitar.
Tobias's interest in the occult also began at a young age—at first manifesting as an aversion to Christianity, as many of the Christians he met in his early life were, "not very nice people", including his stepmother and a particularly strict religious schoolteacher, the latter of which became his "symbol for Christianity and not being very nice". Eventually, this aversion led him to foster an interest in Satanism and the occult as a form of rebellion against the Christian authority figures in his life, which was bolstered further by the music he was surrounded by at the time
