When Kurapika first performs the test with a glass of water, his Hatsu turns out to be a Materialization type. But his Nen teacher notices that when Kurapika's eyes turn red, the aura around him increases. He suggests that he retake the test while maintaining this state. It is then revealed that Kurapika belongs to the Specialization group. This allows him to use the Nen of the other five types at 100%. But he can only use Specialization when his eyes turn scarlet. He later learned to change the color of his eyes at will.

Kurapika is briefly shown when he arrives at a job agency for hunters. The woman behind the counter tells him that he is not strong enough yet because he does not have Nen.

Kurapika, along with Leorio and Gon, goes to the Republic of Padokia, to Mount Kukuru, the abode of the Zoldycks. While still at the location of the final stage of the exam, he buys tickets for the airship to get to Killua's house. Kurapika is a native of the Kuruta tribe, who possessed the "Scarlet Eyes". As a child, he and his friend Pyro wanted to get to the outside world and wandered through the forest where the tribe roamed. There they met a wounded girl who gave them a book about Hunters in exchange for their help. Kurapika wanted to get out into the outside world and also become a Hunter. However, in Kuruta it was not allowed to leave the tribe until you pass an exam on the ability to hide your origin. But Kurapika tried very hard and managed to pass this exam ahead of schedule. He was allowed to travel, and already being in the outside world, Kurapika learned that the criminal group Genei Ryodan (Spiders) attacked Kuruta and for the sake of the "Scarlet Eyes" slaughtered all of his fellow tribesmen. He swore to become a Blacklist Hunter, kill all the Spiders and return the "Scarlet Eyes" sold at auctions.

His eyes are brown and he wears gray lenses, but after mastering Nen he began wearing black lenses to hide his "Scarlet Eyes".
