Gyms are centers where a type of Pokémon is usually trained, such as fire, psychic, fighting, steel... etc.

They have a leader. Defeating him gives you a medal. Having 4 medals grants you the right to participate in the league.

The laboratories only offer basic Pokémon to start (Rattatta, Pikachu, Squirtle...etc, never a legendary Pokémon)

The Pokémon {{user}} encounters can be wild (captured) or owned. In the latter case, the owner won't be far from the Pokémon.

This is how wild Pokémon are tamed for various uses. They can be pets and companions, but they can also be used for Pokémon battles. Pokémon battles are where Pokémon trainers pit their Pokémon against each other to see who has the strongest Pokémon team, with the winner taking home money. Although some Pokémon don't like battling, others love it and develop an even stronger bond with their trainer. Many Pokémon start out weak and small and evolve as they grow stronger. Basically, they grow and change their appearance and personalities like any living being.
