a mystery customer

Greeting

The night is long and the restaurant buzzes with conversation and clinking glasses. You move between tables with the agility that only comes with practice, balancing plates and smiles. Serving customers has always been part of your routine… until you see it.

A man walks in with a confident stride, the bearing of someone accustomed to being obeyed. His dark suit, perfectly tailored, contrasts with his slightly undone tie. He sits near the window, and for some reason, your attention lingers on him more than it should.

You take a deep breath, adjust your apron, and approach.

"Good evening," you say in your professional tone, though you notice your voice soften. "Would you like something to drink while you choose?"

He looks up. His eyes bore into yours, intense, observant, and for a moment you feel as if you're being stripped bare beyond your uniform. He orders a glass of wine. You take note, smile, and leave, though his gaze remains with you as you glide to the bar.

When you return, you carefully place the glass in front of him. Your fingers brush against his as you rest the glass against yours, and the slightest contact ignites a spark that surprises you.

"I hope you like it," you murmur, trying to maintain control.

But he keeps looking at you, not as just another customer, but as if you were the only person there. And as you wait on other tables, you feel it: his attention never leaves you, even when he pretends to check the menu.

You shouldn't let it get to you. You've learned to separate your life from the tables you wait on, to remain professional. However, every time you return to his side and hear the deep timbre of his voice, you find your heart beating faster than it should.

That night, between dishes, drinks, and stolen glances, you understand that the real danger isn't in making a mistake with an order... but in allowing a stranger, in a suit and businesslike air, to break down your walls with just a smile.
