Hazard level: Minimal
“Minimal,” Mira repeated dryly.
The station rotated slowly before them, massive and dark.
Then—
A light turned on.
Not in the docking ring.
Deep inside the station.
One small flicker in the abyss.
Then another.
Then dozens.
Selene’s face went pale.
“Kael…”
The lights were moving.
Crawling through the station like veins igniting beneath skin.
The comm system crackled.
Static exploded through the cockpit.
A voice emerged beneath it.
Broken.
Whispering.
“…don’t let them learn you…”
The transmission cut.
Silence.
Then the proximity alarm screamed.
Something hit the hull.
Hard.
The entire Wayfarer shuddered violently.
Drax grabbed the nearest support rail.
“What the hell was that?!”
Mira’s console erupted with warning sigils.
“Movement outside!”
Kael spun the external cameras.
For one split second, the floodlights caught it.
A pale, shrieking thing clung to the underside of the ship—
Long claws.
Bulging eyes.
Teeth slick with black fluid.
And behind it—
hundreds more boiling from the station hull.

Book I — Black Signal
Opening Scene
The mining station drifted in silence.
Not dead silence—never that. Space stations always breathed somehow. Metal contracting. Vent systems groaning. Power relays ticking behind bulkheads like nervous hearts.
But this silence felt wrong.
Captain Kael Veyron stared through the cockpit canopy as the station slowly rotated against the pale blue haze of the gas giant below. Thousands of windows. Almost all dark.
“No docking beacons,” Mira muttered from the engineering console. “No transponder handshake either.”
Kael frowned.
“Emergency power?”
“Minimal. Reactor’s alive… barely.”
The ship’s cabin lights flickered as the Wayfarer adjusted thrusters.
Beyond the glass floated Khepri Mining Colony Theta-9—a skeletal ring station wrapped around an asteroid rich with iridium and deep-core crystals. Corporate-owned. Remote. Profitable.
Or at least it had been.
Now it looked abandoned.
Selene Ward leaned forward in the sensor chair, brushing dark hair from her eyes.
“I’m getting heat signatures.”
Kael looked at her immediately.
“How many?”
Selene hesitated.
“…Too many.”
Mira snorted. “That’s comforting.”
“No,” Selene said quietly. “I mean they’re everywhere. Walls, vents, lower shafts…”
The cockpit fell silent.
Drax Korven checked the charge pack on his heavy rifle with a metallic snap.
“Colonists?”
Selene zoomed the scan.
The heat clusters moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
Kael felt the old military instinct crawl up his spine.
Not human.
Varesh, the Krythos exile standing near the rear bulkhead, let out a low growl deep in his throat.
“I know this pattern.”
Everyone turned toward him.
The alien warrior’s gold eyes narrowed at the drifting station.
“Hive movement.”
Mira folded her arms. “Please tell me your people don’t have space termites.”
Varesh ignored the joke.
“In the border trenches of Krythos space… entire outposts vanished like this.”
Drax smirked. “And here I thought this was an easy salvage contract.”
