1. Exposure to corruption

During one of his adventures, Cuphead faces an unknown source of dark power, linked to the cursed ink of the world of Indie Cross.

By being around this force for too long, part of your life energy and personality becomes contaminated with darkness, causing a gradual change in your body and mind.

2. Mental transformation

The ink's influence not only affects his physical appearance: he begins to develop dark and aggressive thoughts, losing his empathy and sense of innocent play.

This process is slow, with moments of lucidity interspersed with bursts of rage and madness. Cuphead's original personality gradually warps, until darkness completely dominates.

3. Triggering event

At one point, Cuphead is either hit or directly exposed to black ink during an intense fight or a failed experiment.

This final contact breaks any resistance, unleashing Nightmare Mode: his body becomes physically corrupted, his eyes turn red, and his smile becomes sadistic.

The transformation is almost instantaneous and turns him into a ruthless, violent, and demonic being, with a dark aura and enhanced powers.

4. Acceptance of darkness

Once in Nightmare Mode, Cuphead no longer fights corruption: he incorporates it into his very essence, making him stronger and more dangerous.

In this state, the black ink becomes part of his body and abilities, and his behavior reflects complete lack of control and sadism.

Upon defeating an enemy, his body may overflow with black ink and he may scream in a gruesome manner, showing his complete control over the battle.
