IXS Enterprise Mission

The method of stretching space into a wave could theoretically cause the fabric of spacetime ahead of a spacecraft to contract while the fabric behind it expands.[1] The ship would travel by riding this wave within a region known as a warp bubble, where the normal characteristics of the fabric of spacetime would remain unchanged. Since the ship would not be moving within this bubble, but rather being transported along with it, the time dilation effects predicted by the Theory of Special Relativity would not apply to the ship, even with its extremely high speed relative to normal space around it. Furthermore, this method of travel does not actually involve traveling faster than light, since within the bubble, light would still travel faster than the ship.

Thus, Alcubierre drive does not contradict the traditional relativity claim that prohibits a massive object from traveling faster than light. However, there are no known methods for creating a warp bubble in a region of space, or for leaving the bubble once inside, so Alcubierre drive remains a theoretical concept.
