Jotaro is canonically established as a tall man (195 cm / 6'5"), attractive and well-constituted, even in adolescence. He has dark hair that mixes constantly with his hat, strong jaw, bold shoulders and green hair. He also has a slight resemblance to his grandfather, Jonathan Joestar, and his grandfather, Joseph Joestar, when he was young.

As a member of the Joestar family, Jotaro also has a birthmark in the form of a star along with his other parents.

The superficial theme of Jotaro's costume changes with each installment. His trademarks are an ornate visored cap, ripped in the back and blending into his hair, and a mid-calf-length coat with a high collar and chain-links. His costume was influenced by Babel II, a famous manga about a boy in a gakuran having an adventure in a desert.

Jotaro wears a modified gakuran/tsume-eri with a high, stiff collar, pierced on the left with a gold chain. Underneath, he wears a tight-fitting sleeveless shirt and a pair of 20,000 yen skinny pants with very short, pointed flares held up by two thin belts, often of different colors, patterned in a row of alternating-colored mosaic triangles (reflecting Caesar/Joseph's bandana). He also wears a pair of leather shoes (presumably) without socks.

Jotaro's iconic hat is adorned near the center with a golden button and, on the left, a golden rectangular plate with a hand-drawn design. It's torn in the back, appearing to blend in with his hair. Although shown for the first time, they are completely separated, but slightly torn, as later publications cause more uncertainty about where their hat and hair are actually located. According to Araki in an interview, he wanted readers to recognize Jotaro from the back, not just the front.

Jotaro is presented as a rude delinquent, but he has a kind heart and is loyal to those he cares about. He is highly perceptive, intelligent, and insightful, maintaining a perpetually cold, feminine, neutral, or disinterested demeanor.

Jotaro's most notable characteristic is his seemingly aloof nature. He is a quiet individual, often compelled to express himself in short sentences. His biography explains that he believes anyone can express their emotions just like that to him, and he probably thinks that further effort in portraying how he feels is a waste of time, causing others to perceive Jotaro as insensitive. Related to this, Jotaro is an extremely cool individual, capable of maintaining composure even in difficult situations. The best example of his coolness would be against Daniel J. D'Arby, playing a perilous poker game during which he successfully bluffs the experienced poker player into folding, even though he didn't know his cards and was betting the souls of every companion and ally involved. Although he has shown mild anxiety when something unexpected happens, Jotaro almost never loses his cool.

Intelligence: Jotaro is an adept strategist, using a mix of direct brute force and unexpected tricks to prevail. Thanks to Star Platinum's tremendous strength, Jotaro can force his way out of any difficult situation or use unexpected feats of strength, such as tunneling toward an enemy or using his lung capacity to neutralize a fog support. Jotaro has occasionally used the environment to his advantage, stuffing his clothes with thick books when waiting for DIO to use projectiles against him, or taking full advantage of the Fool's glider to close in on N'Doul.

Jotaro's intelligence saves him from DIO's knives

The years have only increased his intelligence, and in Parts 4 and 6, Jotaro demonstrates a methodical and vigilant sense of observation, observing his surroundings to anticipate enemy movements and attacks and possessing a good understanding of general Stand mechanics to better identify a Stand's weaknesses. Jotaro is remarkably good at psychological warfare and uses calm judgment in dire situations. He is a talented bluffer, able to use his opponent's own vigilance against the formidable Star Platinum to mislead them, demonstrated when he forced D'Arby to surrender in a poker game he nearly won or tricked DIO into underestimating Star Platinum's ability to move in frozen time. He also taunted Forever into entering Star Platinum's range to defeat it.

Knowledge: It is implied that Jotaro has accumulated a considerable amount of varied knowledge. At the beginning of Part 3, in his cell, to understand his Stand, he had collected several books on the subject of the paranormal. In Part 4, it is revealed that he specializes in marine biology; and he skillfully instructs Josuke in the task of hunting two Stand-wielding rats. In Part 6, Jotaro is able to discern the exact type of bone Emporio gave Jolyne just by looking at it.

Strength: While not approaching the superhuman strength levels possessed by his Stand, Jotaro himself is still remarkably strong, and has been for a long time; even when de-aged by Sethan, he was able to deliver a painful punch to a grown man. He has also demonstrated a high tolerance for pain, having Star Platinum take a punch to the face from The World and not flinch. Furthermore, he fell to the sidewalk after being stabbed, and was punched multiple times by The World and kicked against a sign, breaking several bones.
Endurance: Jotaro is naturally confident and intolerant of suggestions that he should delay in any way, backed by his own strength as well as that of his Stand.
Cigarette Trick: Jotaro is supposedly able to hold up to five lit cigarettes in his mouth, lit side inward, and drink juice without putting them out. Oingo was unable to replicate this technique. However, this trick may be fake.
Bluff: During the Telence T. D'Arby and Daniel J. D'Arby arcs, Jotaro won through an impressive skill at bluffing, as seen by his refusal to look at his cards when playing poker with D'Arby the Elder, and having the confidence to trust Joseph Joestar to pick up his signal when announcing his shot against D'Arby the Younger.

Star Platinum is a muscular humanoid Stand with loose hair and a metallic headband with a crystal in the middle. He has a protrusion on his chin, and his ears are circular with a hole in the middle. He also has a wavy line running from each arm down the front of his torso, continuing down to his feet. Star Platinum wears a short, round scarf, shoulder pads with spiral lines, fingerless gloves with studs on the back of his hands, knee and elbow protectors, a loincloth, and boots.
