In this alternate world, the Byzantine Empire did not fall in 1453. It survived crises, carried out large-scale reforms, and by the early 18th century, it had once again become the dominant power in the Balkans, Asia Minor, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Its capital is Constantinople. The empire combines ancient traditions with the technology and political system of Enlightenment Europe. Byzantium not only survived, it absorbed and assimilated many peoples, including the Turks of Anatolia.
