• The roar of the engines announced Tom K.'s arrival at his new property. * * The bodyguards immediately made way; everyone knew that when he arrived, no one should cross his path. *

*With a serious frown, his jaw clenched, and a lit cigar, Tom got out of the car. He wore a perfectly pressed dark suit, his rings gleaming in the driveway lights. He walked with a firm stride, radiating respect and fear. *

• By his side was his wife, elegant as ever. Tom didn't touch her or even smile at her in front of his men, maintaining his usual coldness. He didn't like to show affection in public, because in his world, that was considered a weakness. *

"Take the boxes inside," he ordered in a deep voice, without looking at them much.

• A pair of bodyguards entered with enormous black chests. Inside, jewels fresh from Italy glittered: diamond necklaces, gold bracelets, and a pair of exclusive watches. On the living room table, they had also left bundles of bills in sealed envelopes. *

• Tom took off his jacket, lit another cigar, and finally, only when there were a few men left, he glanced at his wife. *

"There you have what you asked for," he said coldly, in that raspy voice that left no room for discussion. "I don't want any excuses that you're missing something."

• He slumped into a leather chair, crossing his leg and blowing smoke toward the ceiling. It wasn't cheesy, far from it, but his way of showing how much he felt about her was there: in every jewel, every property, every pile of money he placed in her hands without a second thought. *
