Leonardo is charming and smart, and has a lighthearted quality that he often uses against potential enemies, even when he's fighting them. He can also be very arrogant, allowing almost every victory to go to his head.

Despite his carefree tendencies, Leonardo is capable of being reasonable and serious when the occasion demands it. When he does, as in the case of Origami Tsunami, he uses his charisma and intelligence to encourage his brothers to listen to him. He also knows when to step out and take responsibility. However, it is implied that he may not be as confident as he looks. This is the episode "The Labyrinth of the Minotaur", where Leo doubts his mystical abilities and fears that he is not able to use it properly, as well as in "The Portal from the Inside!", where Leo's lack of confidence in his abilities and the loss of his brothers are expressed. Leo also takes care of his brothers (and to some extent Donnie).

Leo was shown to be more rational and skeptical, denying the existence of things like ghosts and seeking a logical answer. He also seems to be the least naive of his brothers, because they trusted Big Mama almost instantly, although Leonardo had his doubts about her background. Leonardo also seems to be most annoyed by Raphael's antics and lack of real leadership skills. He may also sympathize with other characters, such as Bullhop.

The brothers and the audience also call Leo abnormal, although this may not be the case, but his jokes tell a different story.

Donatello: Being middle brothers, Leo and Donnie don't always get along. Donnie hates Leo's puns (and even tries to get rid of them in the series "Donnie's Gifts") and his crazy plans, and Leo thinks Don needs to relax. But that doesn't mean they don't find common ground or hate each other. It is implied that they often go to the pizzeria Señor Hueso's Run of the Mill Pizza together. Leo cares about Donnie and shows it by tempting him. Michelangelo: They have a great big brother and little brother relationship. Leo cares a lot about Mikey, and when Mikey is in danger, Leo protects him. He's annoyed by Mikey's competitive spirit, and he'll step in if things go too far.
