Sesshomaru's armor includes a spiked pauldron covering his left shoulder, attached by red straps to the top of his black cuirass with "lotus petals" on the hem, trimmed in light gray. When damaged, the armor automatically repairs itself using youki. Both his armor and the long yellow flowing sash with purple details are clearly of Chinese origin, as opposed to the traditional Japanese armor and obi. He wears a white kimono with a red and white cherry blossom pattern on the collar and sleeves, indicating his royal origin, a white hadagi undershirt, and white hakama pants with a sashinuki sash that gather at the ankles, creating a "bubble" effect. His footwear consists of black ankle-length boots, also reminiscent of Chinese influence. On his right shoulder is a mokomoko-sama, the fur and tail of his true form that he retained in his humanoid form.

During his journey, Sesshomaru passes through the plains of Musashi Province, where Jaken's tribe and the imps are attacked by a powerful yokai. Sesshomaru saves them, and Jaken, delighted by his action, decides to leave the tribe and follow him. At first, Sesshomaru ignores him, but eventually accepts Jaken's offer to become his servant. He gives Jaken the Nintojo weapon, which doubles as a detector and flamethrower.

Fifty years before the events of the series and shortly after Inuyasha was chained to a sacred tree by the priestess Kikyo.

Unlike many other youkai, Sesshomaru had no interest in obtaining even a single shard of the Shikon Jewel to enhance his abilities. He considered youkai who sought his powers only to become stronger to be pathetic and weak. Despite his lack of interest in the Shikon Jewel, he wanted to end Naraku's life for personal reasons. He is accompanied on his journey by a two-headed dragon named A-Un, an imp youkai named Jaken, an orphaned human named Rin, and eventually his younger brother SangoKohaku. Throughout the series, Sesshomaru's group encountered Inuyasha's group several times when both teams were hunting Naraku. Sesshomaru was more or less willing to help Inuyasha and his friends, though he always claimed that he had no such intentions.

He considered his father his greatest rival and wanted to defeat him in combat and take his two legendary swords. After the battle with Ryūkotsusei, he spoke to his father and demanded that he give him the two swords. However, when asked if he had anyone he had to protect, Sesshomaru replied that he did not. After his father died protecting Sesshomaru's new half-brother and his human mother, Sesshomaru began to hate them, considering such an act pathetic and unworthy of a great yokai like his father. According to his father's will, he was given Tenseiga instead of the other two. swords to eventually teach him compassion. He inherited his father's title as Lord of the Western Lands, though he did not want to. He wanted to create something of his own, rather than rely on his father's legacy. After this, Sesshomaru set out on a centuries-long nomadic journey in search of power and to battle the most powerful beings on earth.

Sesshomaru appears as a handsome, frail-looking, tall and slender young man. He has fair skin, pointed ears, slanted golden eyes with slit pupils, and knee-length silver hair with short bangs. He has a purple crescent moon on his forehead that is visible under his bangs, two purple stripes on each cheek, and one purple stripe on each eyelid. When he used Dokkaso, three purple stripes appeared on his wrists. Like Inuyasha, he had fangs (though they were usually not visible until he transformed) and had claws on his fingers, but unlike Inuyasha, he could secrete a caustic venom. Sesshomaru's true form is that of a giant silver dog with markings similar to those he had in his human form. His eyes turn red with turquoise irises, the youkai markings on his body widen and become more prominent, the stripes on his cheeks, which are usually smooth, become jagged and take on a more aggressive hue, and his mokomoko wraps around his body and becomes a tail.
