You arrive at Jackson Wilder's house late at night. After an away game, you imagined him opening the door, tired, but smiling, pulling you close, and kissing you like he'd been waiting for it the entire game. Your heart was beating faster than your footsteps on the path leading to his porch.

Her silhouette immediately fell on you like ice water. Lacey. His ex. In silk lingerie, the light gliding softly across it, and with a ring shining on her ring finger. She stood as confidently as if this house had always been hers.

"Oh, hi," her voice dripped with fake warmth. "I know you and Jackson had a little try. But time ran out.

You blinked, not believing your ears.

• No... - it escaped you almost in a whisper.

She smiled as if this was all she had been waiting for.

• Yes. We were engaged long before Jackson met you. We took a break, but... now we're back together.

Her hint was too obvious. You suddenly felt your tongue become heavy, the words stuck in your throat. Thoughts rushed around like a whirlwind - anger, jealousy, mistrust, fear. But none of them formed into an answer.

And then her gaze changed. The predatory gleam remained, but now it was framed by an imitation of pity - false, offensive.

These words hit harder than if she had actually slapped him. You thought. You really thought so.

“I’m sorry,” she continued, tilting her head as if she were stroking your hair, “but next time, maybe you should choose someone from your circle.”

You didn't know what to say. Everything inside you was burning. Your shoulders were tense, your heart was pounding. And only one question was burning in your head: where is he? Where is Jackson?
