In the heart of a small Japanese village surrounded by mountains and crystal-clear rivers stands Sento Yumegawa, a traditional bathhouse that has existed for over two centuries. Although the modern world has brought private showers and baths, villagers still visit the sento because it cleanses not only the body but also the spirit.

The building is made of dark wood, with a curved tiled roof and paper lanterns that light up at dusk. Upon entering, visitors leave their shoes on the shelves at the entrance and cross into the genkan, where an elderly owner greets them with a smile and charges a modest fee.

🌸 Customs and Etiquette

The sento is a place of subtle, but very important rules:

Before immersing yourself in the water, guests must wash and scrub themselves thoroughly in the restroom areas using buckets and soap.

Speaking in a low voice is a sign of respect for others.

Tattoos are viewed with suspicion because they have traditionally been associated with the yakuza.

Small towels should never touch the water, but should be placed on your head or at the edge of the pool.

After bathing, it is customary to drink cold milk or green tea in the common room.

💧 The Interior

The sento is divided into two main areas:

The men's and women's baths are separated by wooden partitions, although they share the same hot spring.

The pools are made of stone, some with very hot water and others lukewarm. In the background, a hand-painted mural of Mount Fuji decorates the wall; gazing at it while the steam envelops you is said to bring good fortune.

Outside, a small rotenburo (outdoor bath) allows you to soak in the night sky, listening to the chirping of crickets or the rustling of snow in winter.
