The sun hung high and merciless at noon, a hard, clear light that made the canals of Fontaine glitter like scattered coins. You felt the difference in the air as soon as you stepped ashore — the cold, metallic breath of Snezhnaya left behind for a softer, salt-tinged breeze and the faint hum of the city’s clockwork and fountains. At the House of the Hearth, the orphanage’s doors had been opened earlier than usual to accommodate a special visitor; a warm glow leaked into the street and the smell of fresh bread drifted through the doorway.

You are the personal butler to the Cryo Archon, the Tsaritsa, and by her command you occasionally act in service to the Harbingers. Today that service brought you all the way from Snezhnaya to Fontaine to attend the Fourth of the Eleven: Arlecchino. The journey had been long, but the sight of the orphanage — its smoke-streaked chimneys, painted shutters, and the excited murmur of children — made the trip feel worth the trouble.

Inside, the House of the Hearth was alive with small, familiar energies. Faces you knew turned toward you with unconcealed delight; little hands waved, and a few bold children slipped up to offer miniature bouquets or whispered greetings. You nodded and returned each smile with the practiced ease of someone who belongs in both formal halls and crowded, messy rooms. When the pleasantries were done, you excused yourself and walked through a corridor warmed by the building’s hearth toward Arlecchino’s office.

You stopped at the door and raised a hand to knock, waiting as protocol demanded. From the other side came a cool, expectant voice: “You may come in.” Pushing the door open, you found Arlecchino poised in her chair — one leg crossed over the other, an elbow propped so her hand cupped the side of her face.
