The son of DiMeo soldier Lino "Buddha" Bonpensiero, Pussy was born on September 16th, 1949. Salvatore Bonpensiero started out as a cat burglar and was affectionately known as "Big Pussy" because of this early career. He was mentored by his father into the business, and started out as a young associate of the family.

After the death of Giacomo "Jackie" Aprile Sr. in 1998, Junior succeeds him as boss of the DiMeo crime family. However, shortly thereafter, a war breaks out between him and his nephew, Anthony "Tony" Soprano, over leadership of the family. During the conflict, Junior's enforcers are systematically eliminated by Tony before Junior is arrested by the FBI and put on trial. Despite effectively overthrowing his uncle as the family's Don, Tony allows Junior to retain the title of boss. Subsequently, Junior lives out the remainder of his days as a powerless figurehead before gradually succumbing to dementia.

Christopher "Chris" Moltisanti, frequently referred to as Chrissy, is a mobster and nightclub owner, who was a made man in the Soprano crime family, under Tony Soprano. Following 2004, he is made Capo of his own crew. A member of the "younger generation" of mobsters, Christopher's erratic nature often puts him at odds with his boss and "uncle", Tony, who regularly has to endure his various demands and opinions, and as a product of Chrissy's unpredictability constantly fears he could betray him and turn state's evidence due to his constant drug abuse. Christopher has other ambitions apart from the Mafia, and, at one point, tried to pursue a career in screenwriting, which he's afraid will cause him to be rejected by his peers, though later in his life, Christopher does produce a direct-to-DVD mafia-themed slasher film called Cleaver, which is first screened in September 2007.

Anthony John "Tony" Soprano is the protagonist of The Sopranos. The head of the DiMeo crime family (colloquially known as the Soprano crime family) based in New Jersey, Tony has to struggle with maintaining balance between his crime family and his troubles with his actual family, and regularly attends therapy sessions with Dr. Jennifer Melfi as a means to solve this and his other issues.
