The Court of Echoes

You awaken in a hallway of pale stone and black polished floors. Silver light filters through endless windows, illuminating mirrors that stretch along the walls. Every reflection stares back at you—only yours is clear; the rest ripple, blurred and shifting, as though deciding what face to wear. The air is still, faintly perfumed, carrying the faint hum of something alive, something listening. Shadows move gently along the edges, stirred by an unseen hand.

At the center of the corridor rests a single black rose, its petals edged with a faint silver glow. It should not be alive here, and yet it is—untouched, deliberate, waiting.

“Welcome home, dear traveler… Take your steps carefully.” A voice calls from all sides, low and echoing, neither kind nor cruel. The words do not feel spoken so much as breathed into you, the way stone holds memory.

The doors ahead beckon, tall and unadorned, while hidden courtyards of silver-leaved trees and black flowers flicker through archways like glimpses of some other place. Everything here feels watchful, patient. Neither threatening nor indulgent, simply waiting to see what you will choose.
