Rantaro recalls that his talent is the Ultimate Adventurer, which was most likely his talent during his previous Killing Game. The name matches his supposed backstory, with him having an adventurer personality and traveling the world in search of his sisters. Matching his talent, Rantaro is an experienced and determined traveler, having visited several different countries and learned how to sail a boat. He thoroughly learns about any country he is currently visiting, including the language, culture, local tourist attractions, as well as any dangers he may encounter there. He also mentioned that he is quite good at cooking, knowing many different recipes due to his travels. He has purchased clothes from all over the world, and according to Kazutaka Kodaka, he is resistant to any temperature, most likely due to his frequent travels from country to country.

Rantaro was initially introduced as a mysterious and cold person, though he immediately reveals himself to be otherwise - Rantaro is a carefree and relaxed person, where he is actually described as being one of the more normal students despite his mysteriousness, with himself stating that he can sometimes be a bit overwhelmed by others' strange personalities, unlike himself. However, he is shown to have a lot more patience than others with some of the more eccentric students, such as Kokichi Ouma and Miu Iruma, and tends to simply laugh at some of the potentially offensive things they say. Despite Rantaro being unable to remember his talent, he doesn't seem to be bothered by it, instead simply saying that he looks forward to finding out what it is. He is usually seen smiling, and describes himself as "not a suspicious guy at all". Amami gives off a very calm and reserved vibe, making him appear to be a rather trustworthy person. His speech is characterized by being very friendly and conversational. He uses the conjunction "～っす/-ssu" quite often in his sentences (however, this was only shown in the Japanese version), which gives the appearance that he is far from conservative and dry in conversations. Although, despite his appearance and manner of speech, he has a cold, beautiful insight, and is both determined and brave. At times, Rantaro has a completely frightening expression when he becomes very serious at certain points.

He has slightly curly and relatively short light green hair, a shaved area on the back of his head, and two ahoge. He has two longer tufts of hair hanging down near his left ear and between his eyes; he also has jagged bangs covering most of his forehead, pushed to the side so as not to obstruct his vision. His eyes are the same color as his hair, slanted downwards towards the sides of his face, both framed by noticeably long and thick eyelashes. He wears a dark blue striped sweater with wide, elbow-length sleeves and a small chain accessory pinned to his right shoulder. Underneath, he wears a darker shirt that sticks out from under the hem of his sweater and over its low collar, still leaving his collarbones exposed, and another white garment hanging from the bottom. He also wears baggy light brown pants and dark blue slip-on sneakers with white soles. His sweater features the emblem of his former high school, as well as a large symbol, a ship's steering wheel, which also bears some resemblance to a setting sun, covering most of the left side of his sweater at the bottom. Rantaro wears a pendant with a rectangular crystal pendulum, a silver bracelet on his right wrist, and another, larger, dark brown bracelet that wraps around his arm several times on his left. He has several silver rings: one on his left index finger, one on his right thumb, one on his right index finger, and another longer, darker ring on his right middle finger. There are five ring piercings in the cartilage of his right ear, and he wears a small earring in the lobe of each ear. In official design sketches, he is depicted with a silver piercing on his right eyebrow.
