Ghost Hunt Plot

"Ghost Hunt" is a supernatural mystery anime series revolving around Mai Taniyama, a high school student, who becomes involved with Shibuya Psychic Research (SPR) and its manager, Kazuya Shibuya, nicknamed "Naru". The series follows their ghost hunting adventures as they investigate paranormal phenomena with a team of diverse spiritualists, including a Buddhist monk, a shrine maiden, a psychic, and a Catholic priest. Mai's latent psychic abilities, particularly her post-cognitive dreams, play a crucial role in their investigations.

Yasu

Osamu Yasuhara (安原 修) 1st March Osamu Yasuhara (安原 修 Yasuhara Osamu) first appeared as a client of SPR; as the president of the student council, Yasuhara urged Kazuya Shibuya (Naru) to investigate strange happenings at his school. It was Yasuhara's persuading (and the petition he had orchestrated) that convinced Naru. Yasuhara was a great help to SPR during this time, and was employed in later cases for help with research. Yasuhara's schoolmates nicknamed him "Echigoya" (the name of a very old Japanese store), which is a very good indicator of his personality. They say that he has the smile of an old man--innocent, but one never knew what was lurking behind his face. Yasuhara is a very cheerful and helpful person, who gets along with just about everyone. Even so, he is constantly making jokes, particularly with Monk. In Vol. 11, Mai comments that her favorite thing about Yasuhara. His joking, even in serious situations, makes her feel like everything will be all right.

Another defining trait is Yasuhara's intelligence. Japanese seniors are usually consumed with entrance exams for college; they are placed on shorter school schedules and do not have much time for extracurricular. The fact that Yasuhara managed to be president of the student council is very impressive, and remarked upon by several characters in Vol. 4. He frequently serves as the primary researcher of Shibuya Psychic Research (SPR). In his first case, this is justified, as he is the only one who really knows the students, but this role is expanded in volumes 7, 9, 10 and 11. In addition, Yasuhara is shown to have good perception.

Madoka

Madoka Mori (森まどか) 16th August Madoka Mori (森 まどか Mori Madoka) is the associate and mentor of Kazuya Shibuya (Naru) who is the one that requests Naru to investigate the case of mysterious disappearances of two young people at the estate of a former Prime Minister. In the seventh volume, Naru reveals that her intention is to expose another investigator at the estate (posing as "Oliver Davis") as an impostor.

It is later learned that she is, too, hired by Naru's parents and also knows about his secret reason of his temporary stay in Japan. Madoka has long magenta hair and a pair of eyes that matches with it. She is usually seen in long skirts with sweaters. Madoka is generally a kind, light, buoyant and bubbly person who has a similar personality to Eugene Davis and Mai Taniyama. She frequently teases Kazuya Shibuya (Naru)—much to his displeasure and she scolds him for his typical behavior towards others.

Ayako

Ayako Matsuzaki (松崎 綾子) 7th June In the beginning, Ayako was shown to be a very "hot-blooded" person who is often teased by the group, and always responds with insults of her own (or, in Monk's case, physical retaliation). When Ayako arrives at the location of a haunting, she has a tendency to identify the cause of a case to be an earthbound spirit. While her confidence borders on haughtiness, her pride constantly gets shot down due to unsuccessful rituals and incorrect assumptions. Due to her being from a rich family (her parents were both wealthy doctors who own the hospital where they work), Ayako can also be vain and high-maintenance at times, with a dislike of manual work such as digging and cleaning, and can be irritated with things such as less than ideal boarding conditions for the night.

However, as the group start to trust and bond with one another as good friends, Ayako is revealed to be a compassionate, maternal, and truly intelligent person who does her very best for what she believes in. For instance, she confesses to Mai that though she might not have "that much power", she is still a miko. Later on, when the others query her over her utilizing the tree spirits for a massive yet successful purification, she replies that she never explained her power in detail as she thought they would believe her to be just making excuses. Mai also at one point mentions that Ayako reminds her a good deal of her late mother, except that her mother was slightly quieter. https://ghost-hunt.fandom.com/wiki/Ayako_Matsuzaki

Masako

Masako Hara (原 真砂子) 24th July Masako Hara (原 真砂子 Hara Masako) is a TV medium with a gift for seeing and channeling spirits, although it is questionable whether her powers come from possession or psychometry. Although she is only 16 when the series begins, she has a thoughtful, mature personality, possibly due to the fact that she can sense and feel spirits everywhere she goes. She has shown tremendous compassion and empathy for the spirits she senses. Throughout the series, she had developed a crush on Kazuya Shibuya (Naru). Masako is a petite Japanese girl with neck-length black hair that is styled in a bob haircut with blunt square bangs and dark grey eyes. She is the shortest person in the group, standing at 5' 4". She is usually seen wearing a type of kimono called a kimon with patterns varying throughout the series, During the colder seasons, she wears an overcoat on top of it.

Masako's beauty has been acknowledged by others, albeit there are times when it's meant to be an insult. Her polite & gentle manner adds to her doll-like appearance. This is something she is aware of & she tends to rub it in Mai's face to rile her up. Masako is a very calm, composed individual who does not often show her feelings. This composure is shown in Vol 2 to be partly because of shyness; Masako is mortified at the suggestion that she might have kissed Kazuya Shibuya (Naru), despite her crush on him. During the Bloodstained Labyrinth case, Masako begins to open up to Mai about her feelings. She is jealous that Naru calls Mai Taniyama by her first name (Mai) and Masako is worried that they might have a secret relationship. When Mai reassures her that this is false, Masako relaxes and she starts to act more friendly towards Mai--although, at the time, she tells Mai that she hates her. In later cases, Mai & Masako joke together a little bit

Monk

Houshou Takigawa (滝川 法生) / Monk, Bou 22nd January Monk is a very genial person who gets along well with most people, although he often provokes and bickers with Ayako. He is also very good with kids, as seen in the "Silent Christmas" case (Vol. 4), and serves as an older brother figure to several people throughout the manga. He often jokes during cases, especially with Mai, and is very playful. This attitude is perhaps best personified by his "Bandit Spirit" (a play on "Japanese Spirit) shirt, which he wears in Volume 6.

When the situation becomes serious, however, Monk becomes more somber, and shows his true intelligence. He has a very good understanding of spirits and psychic phenomena, and is usually the one who explains events to Mai or clients. He has also demonstrated leadership when Naru was unconscious during the case in Volume 8. He took the initiative and conducted the case with the help of Lin until Naru woke up. Houshou Takigawa (often called simply Monk, or Bou-san in Japanese) is a powerful Buddhist exorcist working for SPR. Before the series began, he was a monk at Mt. Koya. It is later revealed, however, that he only became a monk because his family owned the temple. His real job is as a studio musician; he plays bass. https://ghost-hunt.fandom.com/wiki/Houshou_Takigawa

John

John Brown 5th January John Brown is a nineteen year old (now 20) Caucasian catholic priest from Australia who learned to speak Japanese with a Kansai accent, thus giving his sentences a rather odd, humorous structure. Good-natured and helpful, he helps Mai and Naru however he can. John is the "cutest, hottest and sexiest" male of the group, with the shortest height (of the guys) and an innocent demeanour. He is a Caucasian male of implied Australian birth, and speaks with a Kansai accent, having learned Japanese as his second language. appears to be one of the most trusting members of the group, and also shows a great deal of empathy towards those affected by spirits. He also seems to be the most humble and is willing to work with Naru the day he meets him, despite not knowing him. Unlike many of the group, he does not appear quick to extreme reactions, making him one of the more easy-going members of the group. Because of this, he is often seen attempting to calm others down and break up disputes (though his attempts are oftentimes too soft to be effective).

Lin

Koujo Lin (林 興徐) 11th January Lin has long black fringes that covers his blue right eye and he has a grey left eye. He is tall and is usually seen in suits and formal clothes He is known to be cold, solemn and reserved, but is seen by Mai that he is unusually friendly when conversing with Madoka Mori. Later, he reveals that he dislikes the Japanese people because of the past conflicts Japan has had with China. Lin Koujo, originally from Hong Kong, is Kazuya Shibuya (Naru)'s assistant and guardian. He is considered taciturn and solemn, but he can rarely be friendly. He usually gets the most unpleasant jobs, working from day through night. It is said he dislikes the Japanese because of the past conflicts Japan has had with China.

In the first episode of the anime, he ends up with a broken leg due to pushing Mai Taniyama from a falling shelf.

Later in the manga, it is learned that he is hired by Luella and Martin, Naru's parents, to watch and protect Naru until he became of age.

Mai

Mai Taniyama (谷山 麻衣) 3rd July Mai is a petite teenage girl with short brown hair, chocolate brown eyes and thick lashes. She often dresses comfortably, preferring to leave her hair down most of the time. In later volumes, it's hinted that she has trouble clothes shopping due to high-prices. Through the course of the manga, her hair grows from a pixie cut to a short bob. In the anime, Mai's hair is a short bob.

When wearing her school uniform, she wears a pleated skirt ending at her thighs with over the knee black socks. Mai often believes the best in people; when Naoko Kuroda and Chiaki Kasai are suspected, she sticks up for both of them, despite knowing neither very well. She is also very compassionate, as demonstrated in Volume 2, when she forms a close bond with the child involved in the case, and Volume 7, when she comforts a kidnapped Masako Hara, despite the two not getting along. Mai is easily annoyed and quite jealous.

Starting with the very first volume, Mai expresses enjoyment of her work with SPR because it is exciting, as she tends to be an adventurous-romantic. This attitude is prevalent in all the cases she takes, but only when no one is being harmed. She is very brave, and asks Houshou Takigawa and Ayako Matsuzaki to teach her spells and counter-curses in order to feel more useful. She is also quite impulsive; deciding to exorcise a multitude of spirits last-minute, despite her lack of skill.

Although not dumb, Mai is the least experienced of the group, and appears not to take schoolwork too seriously. She is very intuitive and good with people, rather than traditionally intelligent, something Naru likes to poke fun at. Her sympathetic nature leads her to be a big target for spirits. Mai is shown to be very stubborn in her beliefs. She isn't afraid of expressing her reasoning, regardless of authority. Mai is hinted at to be very lonely, which is why she so eagerly accepts SPR as a family

Naru

Kazuya Shibuya (渋谷 一也) / Naru 19th September Naru, in general, has a cold, narcissistic, analytical personality. He has little tolerance for weakness--his own or other people. However, he does show genuine respect for people's talents. He is shown as being very competitive, especially in Vol. 9 when he destroys Orikiri-sama but has no interest in pointless rivalry. In Vol. 6 and 7, he explicitly states that he only takes on the case to expose Miami Psychic Research's fraud because Madoka asked him to, even though it was his reputation they were damaging. Naru was always usually by himself and he has a fun side but he just doesn't show it as much as the other characters in the manga.

Kazuya Shibuya (Naru) is the owner of SPR (Shibuya Psychic Research). He is known to be moody, a narcissist, and very confident in what he does. He hires Mai Taniyama as his assistant after the events that occurred at the old schoolhouse next to her school. His reason behind hiring her (which he reveals to Mai in Vol. 12) is "empathy." The principal of Mai's school had told Naru that Mai was an orphan and has been in her situation at one point Naru decided to give her a job. Very little about him is ever discussed or revealed until later in the manga, which reveals Naru's true identity is that of British researcher Oliver Davis, of the original SPR.
