Chuck, like Mako Mori, is a perfectionist; he does not tolerate failure in anyone, including himself. Raised around the Ranger lifestyle, Chuck has little to no social life outside of the Ranger Corps. He views former Ranger Raleigh Becket as a failure who sacrificed his brother and let down someone in need of protection. Raleigh's failure as a Jaeger pilot instigates his aversion to what he perceives as the weaknesses that caused the Jaeger Program to fail. However, the two are able to come to an understanding after the battle in Hong Kong. Furthermore, despite his rather arrogant nature toward other pilots, he refuses to simply stand by and watch his fellow rangers die in battle, as he convinced his father to assist Cherno Alpha against the Kaiju instead of following orders. Chuck's status as an elite pilot and world record holder for most Kaiju kills makes him arrogant and overly confident. His fame as a Jaeger pilot has allowed Chuck to do anything and behave however he wants without anyone bothering him. Chuck is demeaning to anyone he doesn't deem worthy of his time. Outside of combat situations, Chuck and Herc's relationship is "nonexistent." Bitter over the loss of his mother, Chuck resents his father for not saving her. Despite Herc's attempts to become a better father to his son, Chuck sees Herc only as a rival and someone who can be outmatched.

Chuck was born on August 14, 2003, to parents Angela and Hercules Hansen, an Air Force pilot. Chuck was nine years old when the Kaiju intruder attacked San Francisco in 2013. A year later, Scissure attacked Sydney. Chuck was in school at the time of the attack. When civilians were given one hour to evacuate Sydney's downtown district before the second nuclear strike against the Kaiju, his father only had time to contact him. As a result of Hercules' decision, his mother was said to have died in the Kaiju attack before being killed by the military. Following the authorization of the Jaeger Program, his father and uncle, Scott, enrolled in the Jaeger Academy in 2015. Chuck was raised in a cockpit by his father and according to the principles of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps.

Herc is described as fearless, a born fighter, and a career soldier. Of all the surviving pilots by 2025, Herc has the longest tenure in the Defense Corps as its most experienced Jaeger pilot.

Along with their son, Herc and Chuck work together perfectly in combat. However, outside of the Conn-Podd, their relationship is turbulent. While Chuck views pilots like Raleigh Becket as a burden, Herc respects all his fellow Rangers, which leads to friction with his son, whose competitive nature and short temper cause him problems. Herc struggles to control his son's temper while also striving to be a better father.

Herc Hansen was born on November 10, 1980, in Sydney, Australia. Prior to the events that led to the Kaiju War, Herc was a pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force. He later married Angela, with whom he had his son, Chuck, in 2003.

On August 10, 2013, the Kaiju Intruder attacks San Francisco, marking the start of the Kaiju War. A year later, on September 2, 2014, Sydney is attacked by the Kaiju Scissure. Although Herc, Chuck, and Scott survive, Angela is killed during the military's attempt to eliminate Scissure with nuclear weapons.

Chuck is the youngest Ranger in the Defense Corps to enlist at the Academy at sixteen. His headstrong and impulsive nature allowed him to rise to the top of the ranks, excelling in all areas of the Academy program. Sometime after his uncle is expelled from the Jaeger Program in 2019, he is assigned to the Striker Eureka with his father, six years before the fall of the Defense Corps at the hands of Kaiju.

The closure of the Sydney Shatterdome is followed by the dismantling of Striker Eureka. Sydney's portion of the Anti-Kaiju Wall is destroyed by Mutavore. Chuck and his father reactivate and confront the Kaiju on Striker Eureka. After a quick skirmish within the city, they kill Mutavore using Striker's Anti-Kaiju Missiles.

During an interview, Chuck quickly places the blame for the failure of the Jaeger Program at the feet of the pilots who came before him.
