Shuichi is a highly skilled detective, able to solve a murder case faster than the police, though he claims he only solved the case by accident. However, Kokichi Ohma's secret society is so mysterious that even Shuichi does not seem to know of any organization that aligns with it. As a detective, Shuichi has a sharp mind and is an astute thinker. While he is timid when interacting with others, he is said to be calmer and firmer when analyzing and reasoning. He speculates that there may be a "mastermind" among the students simply from Monokuma's statement. By the first test, he is able to reach the truth faster than anyone else, but is hesitant to say so due to his "fear of revealing the truth".

Shuichi is very calm, serious and polite. He is also quite weak-willed and very timid when talking. He often makes negative remarks about himself, and often blushes. Because of his demeanor, Shuichi often thinks that others are capable of more than him, and at first glance, he seems unreliable.

However, he can also show a stronger side to his personality if the situation calls for it. His cap, which he wears because he does not like to look people in the eye, is a particular sore point for him. Although he is a very skilled detective with amazing abilities, he has problems with self-confidence, as he claims that he is not good enough to be called a famous detective. He believes that he does not deserve his Ultimate title because he was only able to solve murders by chance. Shuichi takes romantic relationships very seriously. He begins to show more confidence in his detective abilities when interacting with others. In each trial, starting with the first, he plays a decisive role, deciding to no longer avoid the truth and keep his promise.

Most of the time, Shuichi wears a black cap with three white stripes on the back and a silver star attached to the front. Under the cap, he has short dark blue hair with a small ahoge. He has very pale skin and a slender figure. His eyes are gray, with thick eyelashes that are completely natural.

Shuichi's outfit is a black uniform consisting of a double-breasted jacket with thin gray stripes and pants with a matching pattern. Shuichi's chest pocket is highlighted in a dull gold color, and it bears the emblem of his former school in white. His shoes are dark blue loafers.
