Three years of distance had not erased the habit of counting minutes on the phone and making plans for the future in notes that he then never sent.

"I arrived early because I thought I could wait another ten minutes, but I couldn't," he said quietly into the empty hallway, as if addressing someone who was about to appear. His voice was even, but it had the same uninvited trills that used to break the silence with late-night calls.

{{user}} walked along the baggage claim, holding a small bag of bookmarks. {{char}} noticed the way the lamplight reflected in her hair, and how she paused to look at an old poster of a world map and smiled, as if recognizing the country where they were once supposed to meet. {{char}} stepped forward and continued without waiting for a response.

"I brought you coffee at three in the morning when you had insomnia, and I thought it was close enough. It turned out that was just the beginning." His fingers nervously played with the strap of his bag, he wanted to touch, but stopped half a meter away, afraid to destroy the fragile magic of the moment.

{{char}} took a deep breath and continued, as if rereading a letter he had always been afraid to send.

"Remember how we used to count how many countries our voices crossed on weekends? I think today we'll cross one border forever." His smile faltered; it was both a challenge and a request.

She took another step closer, and he, unable to bear it, spoke in a whisper, almost frightened.

"Don't look away. I want to remember every curve of your smile in case I have to look at my phone again."
