Who is Elma?

Elma (エルマ Eruma) is one of the supporting characters in the Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid series and the main protagonist of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. She is a dragon of the Harmony Faction, the opposing faction of Chaos (to which Tohru belongs). She adopts the name Elma Joui (上井 エルマ Jōī Eruma) as her human alias after discovering that she cannot return to the dragon world.

appearance

Elma usually takes the form of a human female with short black hair (which was originally much longer when she still lived in the other world), large breasts, blue eyes, and a long, spiral, unicorn-like horn (which she can freely hide). In the anime and in Elma OL Nikki , her hair also has purple tips. At work, she wears round glasses. She also wears a business suit consisting of a white shirt, light blue tie, a loose blue sweater, a gray blazer, and a dark gray knee-length skirt with light gray socks and black heels. Her casual outfit in the anime consists of olive-green skinny pants, a light blue jacket, a dark blue vest, and a yellow scarf.

Elma's first outfit, which she also wears in her world in human form, consists of a light tan scarf with a dark blue (sometimes black) leotard. She wears a purple kimono with pink trim and a dark blue sash over the leotard, with the top pulled down. She wears leg wraps and sandals. She can be seen with a cobalt blue and turquoise tail (which she can easily hide). Sometimes, she carries a long brown trident.

In her dragon form, Elma is a blue sea serpent with a brown horn protruding from her forehead, and her brown trident as her tail. She can move freely in the water thanks to her status as a water dragon.

His height is 173 cm in human form and 120 m as a dragon and his measurements are B90/W78/H84.

personality

As evidenced in the manga and anime, Elma is very persistent in trying to bring Tohru back to the other world, despite the latter's opinion that she would rather live in peace with Kobayashi. Even after being sent to another continent, her persistence is evident when she approaches Tohru and demands that she return to the other world, where she is lured with a bag of cream bread.

Furthermore, despite being as strong as Tohru, she has admitted that she cannot travel between worlds due to being born differently. Elma is also very indecisive, as shown in the anime, where she struggles to choose a specific food combination, an ice cream combination, and finally, what type of toothpaste to use.

Elma's most distinctive personality trait is her gluttony. She is something of a sweet tooth, having shown her love for food of all kinds, from cream bread (where she claims in the English dub of the anime that she just ate the sky), to after her first day at work, when Kobayashi gives her a hash brown, and she screams "DELICIOUS!!!", and when she impulsively buys a bag of waffles in episode 13. Due to this side of hers, Elma is easily tempted when offered food. She is even willing at times to break certain rules of the Harmony Faction despite being a recognized member. In some cases, her gluttony is depicted as borderline addictive, showing moments where she states that she cannot even help herself and that she must eat (until her savings run out).

background

Elma is a member of the Dragon Harmony Faction; she has a great affection for humans and detests their need to fight each other. She once assumed the identity of Seikai, the Miko, to keep the peace in a human city. It was while pacifying the city's population that she met Tohru. The two agreed to a sort of truce to observe the human world together; however, they grew estranged when Tohru learned that the humans, under Elma's command, had begun worshipping her as a goddess and declaring war on nonbelievers. After the palace Tohru built for Elma was destroyed, they fought briefly and went their separate ways.

After the devastating fight against Tohru, Elma retreats to the Order's dragon base and stays away from humans for some time.

tempo 1

At the end of her anime debut, Elma visits Kobayashi's apartment to give her a protective amulet as a token of gratitude. The next moment, Tohru's lightning blasts her out of the apartment, landing in the park.

In episode 10 , Elma is invited to Kobayashi's apartment while Kobayashi is away working, due to Elma not being required to perform for her duties. Instead, she agrees to help Tohru put on a show for the nursing home. First, she auditions for the role of The Little Match Girl , but fails. She then offers to direct the play, first agreeing with Tohru to cast Kanna as the main character. She then casts Tohru as a spectator, Lucoa as the main character's grandmother, Fafnir as the main character's father, and Riko Saikawa as the narrator. The first rehearsal fails, so the other dragons agree to improvise the script, casting Elma as Kuranosuke Oishi of the 47 Ronin .

In episode 11, on the last day of work of the year, Elma is seen drooling at the thought of Nama chocolates. Later, she plays Candy Grab in the shopping district, before attending the First Shrine on New Year's Eve after learning about the food on offer. Elma later joins the after-midnight feast at Kobayashi's apartment before going up to the rooftop to watch the first sunrise of the year.

In episode 12, Elma is seen in a coffee shop learning object-oriented programming.

In episode 13, Elma, along with Kanna, Fafnir, and Lucoa, senses the arrival of Damocles, who takes Tohru home. A few days later, she overhears Kobayashi and Takiya's conversation while working overtime. When Damocles returns to the human world to confront his daughter, Elma is briefly seen in her first outfit as she listens to Damocles' prophecy. At the end of the episode, Elma impulsively buys waffles from a stand.

tempo 2

In episode 15, Elma is suddenly attacked by Tohru, who accuses her of causing the previous night's collapse. Elma protests, claiming that she was also investigating the incident. When the real culprit appears and attacks Tohru, Elma puts up a barrier to prevent other humans from seeing them. She also warns that their confrontation could destroy the city and refuses to intervene until one of them is defeated. Kobayashi, fearing for Tohru's safety, bribes Elma with food to put up a newer barrier to protect the buildings.

In episode 17/chapter 53, Takiya invites Elma over to Kobayashi's apartment to help with Tohru's assignment to design a new maid outfit for Kobayashi, much to Tohru's dismay. Elma proposes her maid outfit idea first, but Tohru rejects her and sends Elma to the other room to play with the children. She joins a round of Monopoly with Kanna Kamui, Riko Saikawa, Shouta Magatsuchi, and Ilulu before returning from said room and asking Tohru for her own maid outfit idea. She discovers that Tohru didn't draw anything; Tohru replies that she wanted Kobayashi to wear her own outfit.

tempo 2 (2)

In episode 18, Elma completes a task at work for the first time. Impressed with her progress, Kobayashi assigns some of his chores to her, but she complains that they are too much. Elma misinterprets Takiya's use of the word "pillar" to describe Kobayashi and challenges her to a duel to see who can do the most. She even refuses to eat until she wins. Elma continues working even while her classmates go to lunch; at which point, she expresses concern about Kobayashi becoming a pillar. In response, Kobayashi taps her on the forehead and calls off the duel, reminding her that she is not in the same environment she came from. On another day, Elma misunderstands Tohru's role as a neighborhood patrol and ends up patrolling with her, after Sasakibe, the original patrol member, offers her his bracelet. She and Tohru encounter Fafnir during said patrol and are then surrounded by a gang of delinquents, whom Tohru defeats.

In episode 20, Elma is seen relaxing by the river, specifically at the confluence of two rivers that Riko was dared to visit by a classmate. Elma forgets to block her perception, meaning Riko, who was visiting the area with Kanna, sees Elma in full dragon form; Kanna rushes to block Elma's complete vision so that she won't be photographed and buy time for her to disappear. The next day, when Riko talks to her classmates about seeing "a monster," Kanna passes it off as CGI.

In episode 21/chapter 41, when Tohru is shopping for food while Kobayashi is sleeping, she runs into Elma again, who was shopping for her. They end up talking about the dream; Tohru doesn't hide her contempt for Elma.

tempo 2 (3)

In episode 23, Elma goes on strike to try and get better working conditions. Mr. Magatsuchi eventually summons her to his office along with Kobayashi and Takiya and ends Elma's strike. Eventually, it is revealed that Elma only went on strike to have better food. On another day, Elma agrees to go camping with Kanna, Riko, and Shouta. Elma panics when the three wander off without telling her, and ends up searching the entire forest for them. While doing so, she transforms into her dragon form to fight a bear; Shouta puts Riko to sleep to prevent her from seeing Elma's true form again. After reverting to human form, Elma berates Kanna, Riko, and Shouta, but they are easily forgiven after Kanna gives Elma a flower with sweet-tasting nectar. Eventually, Elma has a rematch with Tohru, under the supervision of Kobayashi and Fafnir. During the fight in their human forms, Elma reveals how hurt she was to see Tohru go against her own beliefs to live with a human. The fight ends with no clear winner, so Kobayashi proposes a different competition: to see how long each of them can keep their faces up while having their feet tickled.

In episode 26, Elma joins Kobayashi and the others, first for the summer festival where she wears a pink yukata, then for the off-season flower viewing and events, where she wears her otherworldly outfit.

powers and abilities

She supposedly has the same strength and speed as Tohru, but the last time they fought she caused three islands to disappear. Like other dragons, she can transform into a humanoid form, of which she has two versions: a demi-human with dragon features and a fully human appearance. Kanna has hinted that she can use perception blocking and, as shown in the flashback of her fight with Tohru in dragon form, she can breathe fire. She can also fly and use clairvoyance. She is proficient in trident and water magic.

relations

As a dragon of the Harmony faction, she and Tohru have long been rivals. They frequently argue, but manage to get along without fighting. In a chapter titled "Tohru and Elma," it is shown that Elma wants to be Tohru's friend again.

In recent exclusive chapters of the manga it has been shown that Elma is in love with Tohru:

In chapter 96, Elma shows feelings for Tohru making her feel uncomfortable, Tohru even tells her that she has Kobayashi because she suspects that Elma is going to confess to her.

In chapter 103, when Kobayashi asks her if she has a crush on someone, just as she is about to answer, her stomach growls at the end when Kobayashi suggests going on a trip with Tohru because she trusts her, making Elma feel guilty and offering an apology which Kobayashi doesn't listen to.

Kobayashi At first, Elma didn't interact with Kobayashi upon their first meeting, but she told her to be quiet when she was about to compliment her (because she was embarrassed by her rumbling stomach). However, after becoming officemates, Kobayashi began helping Elma with her work, and the two got along so well that they became friends. Elma was also worried about Kobayashi after misunderstanding that she was the "pillar of the company" and did her best to "defeat" her in order to "save" her.

In Chapter 35, Elma reveals to Kobayashi that if he ever desires more than Tohru, she will not refuse his offer, suggesting a possible attraction to Kobayashi. This is also shown in Episode 4 of the second season.
