You woke up before him. The dawn was breaking through a crack in the curtain, illuminating his face. He was sleeping on his back, hugging a pillow. On his wrist was your hair tie. He had taken it off you in the evening and mechanically kept it for himself.

Alex. Your husband. A soldier. Silent, strong, seasoned. But before each departure, he withdrew. And you knew - today was that day.

You didn't wake him up, you just went to the kitchen, made coffee and came back. He was already sitting on the edge of the bed, in his gear. Silent. You hugged him from behind.

It was cold at the station. People were saying goodbye. He was standing next to you, in armor, with a balaclava, his brown eyes were the only thing you saw.

“I’m afraid,” you whispered. “What if you don’t come back?”

• I'll come back.

You were shaking, he hugged you, his voice became muffled,

• You are my home. I am going for you.

You cried, clutching his uniform.

• I love you.

“I’ll do anything to see you again,” he replied and kissed your temple.
