Emily is a skilled swordsman and marksman, efficiently wielding Corvo's sword and accurately utilizing her personal crossbow and pistol. She has also received the Mark of the Outsider, granting her a number of unique supernatural powers, such as Domino , Far Reach , Shadow Walk , and more. Now a force to be reckoned with, her weapons, coupled with her newfound powers, allow her to quickly eliminate multiple enemies in succession.

Emily's personality and behavior are heavily influenced by Corvo, who has served as Royal Protector since before her birth, and the Heart indicates that Emily sees more than she lets on. As her father figure and role model, Corvo's approach to eliminating her targets changes not only her behavior, but also her future decisions regarding ruling the Empire. At 24, Emily develops a strong sense of morality, believing her government to be firm and just. Anxious and ambitious, she is prone to impulsive tendencies, albeit with good intentions, especially when faced with a moral grievance. However, her ability to analyze a situation, plan her next step, and follow her best judgment allows her to escape dangerous situations both before and after they occur. Fourteen years after her coronation, Emily is still grateful for Corvo's presence in her life, not only for his training as an assassin, but also for his love, protection, and guidance. She still feels the deep pain of her mother's absence and is often bewildered by the time that has passed since Jessamine's death. Though often overwhelmed by grief, Emily lets those emotions burn in her heart, reminding herself that she has a life of her own and an important role to play. During her royal years, Emily disdains the affection shown her by fawning members of the aristocracy, and is surprisingly self-conscious about her hands, which are constantly kissed, held reverently, and examined.

Eventually, Emily discovers that Delilah is immortal thanks to a séance organized by Duke Luca Abele and his followers, who rescued her from the Void. They also transferred her spirit into a statue, rendering her immortal. Emily manages to eliminate the Duke and recover Delilah's spirit. She traps it in the Heart, thus calming her mother's spirit. Emily then returns to Dunwall. At some point, she discovers Meagan Foster's true identity: Billie Lurk, the woman who helped Daud murder her mother and even conspired to help Delilah subsume Emily's body and become Empress. Emily can choose to kill Billie or let her live, but canonically, Emily spares her. Later, Emily will have the choice to kill her aunt or trap her in the imaginary world she aspired to make real. Canonically, she chooses to trap Delilah and then frees her father Corvo from his frozen state. Emily later regains her rightful place as Empress of the Isles.

Fifteen years after the end of the Lord Regent's uprising, Emily serves as Empress of the Isles. However, a new threat to her reign arises following the murders of the Crown Assassin. Corvo or Emily herself must travel to Karnaca, the southernmost city, to confront the problem. On the 15th anniversary of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin's assassination, Empress Emily Kaldwin hosts the annual event commemorating her death. Tensions between her and Corvo Attano are high due to the Crown Assassin's recent murders, which many believe he is responsible for because the assassin is eliminating Emily's critics. Just moments after the event, Delilah Copperspoon, now known as "Empress Delilah Kaldwin I", bursts into the event accompanied by the Duke of Serkonos, Luca Abele. They overthrow Emily despite Corvo's attempt to kill Delilah, and during the ensuing fight, either Emily or Corvo becomes trapped in the stone. Canonically, Corvo is trapped in the stone and Emily manages to escape the tower. Emily escapes with Meghan Foster, who had traveled to Dunwall to inform Corvo about the coup on her ship, the Terrible Wale. Emily is visited by the Outsider on the way to Karnaca, who offers her the option of accepting his mark. Emily chooses to accept it and, armed with her new powers, sets out to find out why the coup d'état was successful and how to reclaim her throne. Meagan Foster explains that Anton Sokolov, Emily's former tutor, was the one who discovered evidence of Delilah's coup, but he was captured before they could reach Dunwall with the news. From there, Emily eliminates the various members of the coup, rescuing Sokolov in the process.

Emily Drexel Lela Kaldwin was born on the 2nd day of the month of rain in 1827, the daughter of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin I and Royal Protector Corvo Attano. Despite the secrecy of the matter, some citizens of Dunwall (including Farley Havelock, Lydia Brooklaine, and indirectly Treavor Pendleton) speculated that Corvo was her father. As a child, Emily displayed a natural curiosity about the world and was noted for her imaginative wit and drawings. The royal spy chief, Hiram Burrows, privately criticized Empress Jessamine Kaldwin's upbringing of Emily, calling her undisciplined and spoiled. He also disapproved of Emily spending time with Corvo learning to swordsmanship with wooden sticks. For the rest of her childhood, Emily continued her education with her governess Callista, but also learned natural philosophy from Piero Joplin and Anton Sokolov. As she grew older, she embraced her new status and was able to discuss with natural philosophers twice her age. His reign witnessed the restoration and recovery of the Empire, reducing the damage caused by Lord Hiram Burrows's brief coup against it, as well as the impact of Havelock's coup. Trade flowed again, travel restrictions were lifted, the Dunwall City Watch was reorganized, and the Imperial capital expanded. His reign also spurred the gentrification of Dunwall. Despite her courtly duties, Emily felt "caged" at the Imperial Court and continued to train with her father, Corvo Attano, in subterfuge, espionage, surveillance, stealth, and combat. A few months before the Month of Darkness in 1851, Emily began sneaking out of her royal chambers at night to practice running across the rooftops of Dunwall, both to learn about her subjects and to explore the city. Although she believed herself to be alone, she was actually under the watchful eye of her Royal Protector, Corvo Attano, who was careful to ensure that she came to no harm.

Emily Drexel Lela Kaldwin I , is the legitimate heir to the throne of the Isles and the only daughter of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin . On the 18th day of the month of Earth in 1837, Emily was kidnapped after her mother was murdered by the assassin Daud, for which royal protector Corvo Attano was blamed. The Loyalist Conspiracy sought to recover Emily and reinstate the royal line by crowning their empress. Following a brief interregnum under Lord Hiram Burrows, Emily was reinstated as Empress of the Isles. For fourteen years, her reign saw the reorganization of the Dunwall City Watch, increased trade between the Isles, and the development of Dunwall itself. On the 18th of Earth Month, 1852, Emily Kaldwin was deposed from her throne in a coup d'état led by Delilah Copperspoon with the complicity of Luca Abele, Duke of Serkonos. Emily subsequently travels to Karnaca to defeat those involved in the coup and reclaim her throne. Eventually, Emily manages to trap Delilah in The World As It Should Be, her painted reality, and regains her position as Empress of the Isles.
