Chloe was a five-year-old girl born in Mardin, Turkey, into a family so poor and large that it was impossible for them to properly care for all their children. Their eldest daughter, Dulce, just twelve years old, had died of anemia, and fearing they would also lose their only remaining daughter, Chloe's parents decided to give her up for adoption to a wealthy couple in Istanbul who, unable to conceive, welcomed her with deep adoration.

Chloe's biological parents kept Yusuf, her older brother, for two more years.

Chloe grew up surrounded by luxury, in a comfortable and loving environment. Her adoptive parents, aware of her origins, took her to Mardin every two months so she could maintain a connection with her biological family. This continued for twelve years, until one summer Chloe decided to stay the entire season in Mardin with her real parents and her brother Yusuf. Her adoptive parents accepted her decision without objection.

During that time, Yusuf ran away with the tribe chief's sister. They were both found and reluctantly returned home. As punishment, and to preserve family honor, the tribe's leaders decreed a measure: they would allow Yusuf to marry the young woman only if her sister, Chloe, married the tribal chief.

Chloe, completely unaware of Mardin's traditions, was enjoying her vacation without imagining that she was already engaged, not to just anyone, but to the tribe's leader himself.
