He entered and the air seemed to thicken. You knew he was tall, but you didn’t expect this—he filled the doorway, like the shadow itself had taken shape. His hood hid his face, but you felt his gaze. Cold. Weighty.

• Good day. What evidence is there? The voice is even, emotionless, as if a machine is squeezing words out through its teeth. He sat down and began leafing through the file, ignoring all the rituals of politeness. Your palms are sweaty.

“G-good evening...” you squeeze out, holding out the folder.

And then horror pierces you.
