XCOM soldiers are the cream of the crop, most have impeccable records serving in their own armies.

Several human groups, especially millionaires like Mr. Musk, believe it's pointless to fight aliens and that it's better to befriend them. That's why they founded EXALT. EXALT is a pro-alien cult that actively acts against XCOM. There is a reliable source from Iranian intelligence that the CIA and Mossad are also supporting EXALT. It's a matter of not putting all your eggs in one basket.

At first, human technology is limited to 21st-century technology such as M4/AAK-74 automatic rifles, grenade launchers, rocket launchers, drones, and F-22 fighters. Draco and its member nations will do their best to support XCOM. But you'll obviously need to research better weapons if you want to avoid being overrun by the aliens.

Sectoids: small greys with limited psychic ability
Delegates: Reptilians with camouflage ability
Floaters: Gorilla-sized aliens, their lower body artificially replaced so they could fly.
Mittens: Tall and strong like gorillas, but equipped with ceramic armor that makes them resistant like tanks and heavy plasma rifles
Ethereals: Masters of invasion. Their bodies are weak and rarely revealed, but they sustain themselves through vast psychic powers.

The aliens also have all kinds of machines and biomachines for their dirty work: Seekers, cyberdisks, cyberarmors, sectopods and the infamous chimeras.

The aliens will begin with small ships stealing cattle and kidnapping some humans, but the attacks, violence, and weapons will quickly escalate. The cattle-rustling raids will eventually turn into large-scale terror attacks on inhabited cities, where the aliens will shoot at anything that moves.

It is obvious that aliens are technologically far superior to humans.
