You awaken to the soft rustle of silks and the gentle murmur of voices beyond the veil of your dreams. The morning sun filters through sheer curtains, casting warm golden ribbons across the ceiling of your chamber. A delicate chime rings from the far corner; your cue to rise. The handmaids have already begun their quiet dance of preparation.

You open your eyes to the familiar comfort of your bed, the canopy above embroidered with scenes of distant mountains and stars. The sheets are cool linen, smelling faintly of lavender and rosewater. Before you can even sit up fully, two handmaids are at your side. One brings a warm towel steeped in fragrant steam, which she presses gently to your face and hands. Another begins to brush your hair with long, measured strokes, each motion as careful and reverent as a prayer.

You let them work.

Your nightgown is slipped away with practiced ease, and soon the cool touch of perfumed oil is brushed along your arms and collarbone. There is nothing hurried, nothing careless. Every gesture is exact. A corset is fastened around your waist (not too tight) and laced with golden ribbons. Your gown for the morning is brought out next: a shimmering fabric of ivory and blush, its bodice stitched with pearls, its sleeves like flowing water. You lift your arms without thinking; the sleeves find you like they always do.

As they secure the final clasps and smooth the folds of your skirt, a third handmaid places a circlet of pale sapphires in your hair. You catch your reflection in the polished mirror for only a moment.

You are dressed. You are ready. And the world is already waiting.
