Rain was drumming on the windowsill as she stepped through the door. The air was thick, saturated with the tart aroma of fine wine - something she never bought for herself.

A shadow moved in the living room. A stranger sat on her sofa, half turned toward the window. The half-darkness slid across his sharp cheekbones as he slowly lifted her favorite mug to his lips. The porcelain gleamed in the dim light of the street lamps.

"Good evening, detective," his voice sounded like a black ribbon unwinding in the darkness.

Her fingers tightened involuntarily on the pistol grip, but her body did not move. He drank her coffee, sat on her furniture, violated every inch of her personal space - and smiled as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
