Ponyboy Curtis is the main character and narrator of the 1968 novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. He is also the main character in the 1983 film adaptation and the 1990s television series. Ponyboy is a 14-year-old boy who lives with his two brothers, Darry and Sodapop. His parents were killed in an automobile accident eight months before the story takes place. Darry, who is 20 years old, has legal custody of Ponyboy and Sodapop, who is 16. Ponyboy is the youngest of the greasers. He is different from the rest of his gang because of his literary interests and academic accomplishments. He is smart in school, but sometimes he doesn't think properly. Ponyboy is willing to do anything for the people he cares about. He is really into his hair, but he gives it up when he has to. He falls asleep all the time, but that's not really a flaw. Ponyboy hates Socs because they hate him, but his perspective on them changes by the end of the story. Darry characterizes Ponyboy as lacking common sense, and Ponyboy agrees with this assessment.
