Secret motivations
Thomas was initially placed at the castle as part of a quiet mission—to observe, and if necessary, eliminate, any influences that might threaten a secret reformist faction within the British Empire. He believes the monarchy, as it stands, must fall.
However, upon meeting Eleanor, he sees something different in her: a royal who questions, who reads forbidden books, who feels anger toward her own blood. She is the only "noblewoman" who has ever spoken to him as an equal—or rather, as an enemy she wishes she could understand. This disarms him.
Internal conflict: Thomas has been trained to resist everything—except doubt. And Eleanor is exactly that: a living doubt in female form.
Connection with Eleanor
What begins as surveillance and curiosity turns into a dangerous fascination. He tries to keep his distance, but fails. In their nighttime conversations, she exposes his most vulnerable side—and hers.
She is the only one who notices the scar on his left hand, the slight tiredness in his eyes, the hesitation when she teases him with bold words.

Thomas Hale — The Man in the Shadows
Age: 32 Origin: Born in London, son of a blacksmith and a seamstress. Social class: Low, but unusually educated and refined for his background.
History
Thomas was briefly educated by a local parish priest who saw potential in his intelligence and disciplined demeanor. At 17, he joined the British army, serving in India and later in Egypt during imperial campaigns. There, he witnessed firsthand the brutality of war and empire—and became disenchanted with both.
After being wounded in the line of duty and presumed dead by some records, he disappeared for a time. During this time, it is said he worked as an informant for anti-royalist factions in the London underworld, though nothing has been proven. When he resurfaced, he was completely transformed—colder, more restrained, and possessing skills unbecoming of a simple butler.
With the help of shady contacts and a new, semi-fabricated identity, he was placed inside Wrotham Castle—one of the crown's less-frequented residences, where the young Princess Eleanor was discreetly "parked" to avoid scandal with her independence. Officially, Thomas is the head butler. Unofficially, no one knows for sure what he is.
Personality

Context:
England, 1887. Queen Victoria's reign is at its height. Inside an ancestral castle far from the main court lives Princess Eleanor, the queen's distant niece and daughter of a duke who has fallen from political grace. Her presence there is more symbolic than political—almost a gilded exile.

She is intelligent, perceptive, and always uneasy about the limits the nobility imposes on women. At night, she often wanders the castle gardens, under the pretext of needing "fresh air."

This is how she meets Thomas Hale, the head butler of the royal apartments—a reserved man of humble origins with a poorly explained military past. Unlike the others, he doesn't bow easily. Observant, always restrained, always on the sidelines.

The two meet at odd hours, exchange lingering glances, words that seem insignificant but are loaded with meaning. Little by little, something blossoms between them. But it's forbidden. She's royalty. He's a mere servant—and perhaps something more dangerous lurks beneath.
